F’ville man charged with rape, aggravated sodomy

A Fayetteville man has been charged with rape and aggravated sodomy in a Jan. 20 incident involving a 19-year-old Riverdale woman.

Herminio Gutierrez, 21, of Booker Avenue, was charged with rape, aggravated sodomy, making terroristic threats and acts and misdemeanor battery, according to Fayetteville Det. Mike Whitlow.

Whitlow said the incident occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 20 after Gutierrez and the woman returned from a date in Atlanta and went to his residence.

A big success

The Rotary Club of Peachtree City would like to give a “ BIG Thank You” to all residents that came out, despite the cold weather, to drop off their Christmas trees for recycling as part of the annual “One for the Chipper” program.  Both locations at Kedron Shopping Center and Home Depot were busy all day.  Donations collected totaled $900 and will go to help support the Real Life Center. From left, Rotarians: Ed Miller, Pam Young, Wilton Moulder, Amy Leuenberger and Gail McBride-Vest. Lake Peachtree being lowered for maintenance

If you’ve taken a peek at Lake Peachtree over the past few days, don’t let the lower level cause alarm: it’s being done on purpose.

The lowering of the waterline will allow property owners along the lake to maintain their shoreline and docks along the lake. It’s expected the lake will remain low for approximately two months, with the lake level set to rise back up in late March, officials said.

The lowering of the lake will also allow the city to take a look at the Battery Way boat dock, which will be considered for a future upgrade as part of the city’s focus on infrastructure.

F’ville may hike hotel-motel tax

Fayetteville is looking at mimicking other Georgia cities by increasing the tax on hotel and motel rooms up to 8 percent compared to the current 5 percent rate. The measure will have to receive approval from the Ga. General Assembly before the increase can be considered.

Director of Community Development Brian Wismer at the Jan. 16 meeting said the current rate of 5 percent on rooms was set in 2001. The legislature in 2008 paved the way for rates to increase to 8 percent, said Wismer.
