Doris Ellen Dreie of Peachtree City

Doris Ellen Dreier (nee Ferguson) was a true citizen of the world, yet wholly American at the same time. Born to Archer and Miriam Ferguson at Fort Riley, Kan. on the eve of the Great Depression, she grew up in the Army Air Corps living at numerous locations around the United States. The constant moves and uprooting during her childhood forged an inseparable bond between Doris and her younger sister, Thelma and brother, “Billie.” While Billie passed away during his teens, Thelma remained her closest and best friend until Thelma’s passing.

Carlton Frank Schrader, age 90, of Peachtree City

Carlton Frank “Bud” Schrader, age 90, of Peachtree City, Ga. passed away on January 15, 2014.

Bud was born on July 31, 1923 in Saint Paul, Minn. to the late Clifford and Mary Schrader.

He is preceded in death by his sister, Merle Schrader Newell; and his brothers, Phillip Schrader and Lyle Schrader. His brother Robert Schrader (Shirley) of Wentsville, Mo. survives him.

He met his wife, then Mavis Jensen, when they were Junior’s in high school. They were married on September 5, 1942. After 71 wonderful years of marriage, Mavis survives him.

Marvin Walter Whatley, 88, of Peachtree City

Marvin Walter Whatley, 88, of Peachtree City, passed away January 18, 2014.

He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. November 18, 1925. He was a WWII Naval Veteran who served aboard the U.S.S. Thetis Bay, Asiatic Pacific Campaign from 1944 until 1946. He relocated from Chattanooga, Tenn. to Albany, Ga. in 1963 where he was the sales manager for Lonsberg’s Music which became Whatley’s Music in 1973.

Miss Whitewater pageant is this week

The 11th annual Miss Whitewater High School Scholarship Pageant is January 23, 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. in the Whitewater High School Theater. The pageant is the annual fundraiser for the Whitewater Choral Department and will again award college scholarships.
There are 25 contestants competing for the scholarships and the honor of being crowned Miss Whitewater 2014. Several young ladies will be vying for the honor of Junior Miss Whitewater 2014 as well.

Thursday evening will be the talent portion of the competitions.
Friday evening will have the evening gown competition.

Laverne Leverett, 72, of Union City, passed away January 19, 2014.

She was preceded in death by her husband Sherman Joe Leverett.

She is survived by her sons David (Charlotte) Leverett and William (Sandy) Boyd; grandchildren Brent & Jonathan Leverett and Sydney & Chandler Boyd; great-grandchild Kaitlyn Leverett; sister Charlotte Thomas; sister-in-law Betty Bishop; also nieces & nephews.

David Yates Chappell, III, 70 of Fayetteville, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014.

Robotics team advances to state

Rookie robotic teams from three schools made it to the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Super-Regional competition with two of them moving on to compete at the state level.

Teams from Kedron Elementary, J.C. Booth Middle and Rising Starr Middle advanced to the Super-Regional held at Columbus State University on January 11 after placing in their regional competitions. Teams from all three schools competed against each other, and those from other counties.

Arthur L. Grenier, 96, of Peachtree City

Arthur L. Grenier, 96, of Peachtree City, passed away January 18, 2014.

He served his country in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Grenier is survived by his sister, Bernadette Ortynsky of Peachtree City; brother, Rev. Father Louis Grenier, SJ. of Kingston, Jamaica; nieces Suzanne (Russell) Heil and Daria (Rod) Cloyd.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Massachusetts.

Former first lady addresses students

Former first lady Barbara Bush made an appearance at Cleveland Elementary on January 14 to read to fifth graders at the school and take their questions.
The appearance was made via videoconference as part of the Reading Discovery Distance Learning Program at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
