Battle of Brown's Mill reenactment slated for next weekend

Those interested in American history will be able to get an up-close look at a portion of it later this month. The weekend of Jan. 24-26 will feature the Battle of Brown’s Mill-Hospital Town Reeanctment 2014.

To be held at the historic battlefield site on Millard Farmer Road, the event will be the kick-off for the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Battle of Brown’s Mill which will include a reenactment of the battle and of Newnan as a “hospital town” during the Civil War.

Report: 'Ant-Man' to be first Pinewood film

Signs are pointing to a tiny, little-known comic book superhero being the first big-screen blockbuster to film at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayetteville.

Though nothing has been confirmed officially, the movie buzz has lit up with a report from production industry clearinghouse KFTV.com that “Ant-Man” will be the first big movie filmed here.

Sims enjoys her last ‘homecoming’

It should come as no surprise that Sasha Sims’ favorite places to play college basketball have been in Georgia.

A former standout for the Fayette County Tigers, the six-foot forward is a senior at Florida’s Stetson University. Averaging nearly 18 points a game this season, she is a leading candidate for Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year.

Lone Survivor

“Lone Survivor,” the film adaptation of former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell’s bestselling book of the same name, had a historic weekend at the box office.

“Lone Survivor” finished the weekend as the number one movie in America, bringing in $38.5 million. It bested Disney’s “Frozen,” which came in at number two, earning $15 million in its eighth weekend, and Paramount’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” earning $9 million in its third weekend.

The opening weekend marked the second biggest January opening ever after the $40.1 million debut of 2008’s “Cloverfield.”

Headed to nationals

The McIntosh Chiefettes Dance Team attended the UDA Alabama Dance Championship Jan. 11 and won first place for both their pom and jazz routine. They also received the Best Choreography Award for their jazz routine.  The Chiefettes are busy preparing for the National Dance Team Championship Feb. 1-2 in Orlando, Fla.
