Mystery rider dies after 2 chases

A mystery rider on a stolen motorcycle twice led Fayette County law officers on chases from north Fayette into Clayton County Feb. 16 before he crashed into a vehicle in Riverdale and died of his injuries.

He remains nameless because he was carrying no identification, according to Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb.

Babb said the first time a deputy tried to stop the sport bike motorcycle speeding and without a tag near the intersection of Ga. Highway 279 and Helmer Road.

‘Emergency’ declared in Fayette by commission

Allows for federal disaster funds to offset costs

The Fayette County Commission Monday officially declared a state of emergency for the period following last week’s ice storm.

The designation allows the county to be eligible for state and federal recovery funds at a future date.

The commission was also effusive in praising county employees and volunteers who helped weather the storm, from the public works staff to emergency management officials who staffed the county’s emergency operations center.

At retreat, F’ville Council to eye Pinewood services

The Fayetteville City Council will hold its annual retreat on Feb. 25. Among the many items on the agenda for the all-day meeting are a downtown traffic analysis, service delivery in west Fayetteville, the West Fayetteville Master Plan, ideas on marketing Fayetteville and the proposed pedestrian bridge over Ga. Highway 54 at Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

Council members at the retreat will hear a report on a recently completed analysis of downtown traffic.

Female prowling suspect, 30, hit by vehicle

A 30-year-old Fayetteville resident was struck by a vehicle on Feb. 10 while in the roadway on Banks Road in Fayetteville.

Frances Amber Bounds was struck on Feb. 10 at approximately 6:50 p.m., according to Sheriff Barry Babb. She was transported to Atlanta Medical Center, Babb added.

Sheriff’s traffic investigators went to Banks Road near Ellis Road after a call about a pedestrian struck on Banks Road by a vehicle traveling eastbound, said Babb.

F’ville to sign streetlight pact?

An intergovernmental agreement between Fayetteville and the Ga. Dept. of Transportation (DOT) for lighting for the upcoming streetscape project that will add sidewalks and other features to both sides of Stonewall Avenue from Braxton Court to Ga. Highway 85 will be up for a vote Feb. 20 by the Fayetteville City Council.

The intergovernmental agreement addresses the need for 20 street lights to be located along Stonewall Avenue from Tiger Trail to Hwy. 85 in downtown Fayetteville.

PTC’s Father-Daughter Dance lights up the night

Dressed-up dads and daughters descended upon the Kedron Fieldhouse Saturday night for the annual Daddy Daughter Dance hosted by the Peachtree City Recreation Department. The popular event gave dads and daughters an excuse to dress fancy and have some quality time together.

Since 9-11 we have asked a great deal of our all-volunteer military. Over a decade of deployments to war zones make our present force the most combat-experienced ever, but sending individual troops on three, four, five or more combat tours levies immeasurable cost to them and their family.

It should be no surprise that we have a spike in the number of veterans with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) issues and traumatic brain injury (TMI), wounds that are not outwardly visible, and sometimes the care they receive just isn’t enough.
