SGT Major (ret) Frederick H. Kruse, 72, of Peachtree City, passed away November 22, 2013.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army serving as a Finance and Accounting sergeant in Korea, Vietnam, Ft. Ord, Ft. Carson, Germany, FORSCOM as well as other military installations.

Mr. Kruse is survived by his wife, SGM (Ret) Lucie Rivera-O’Ferrall of Peachtree City; sisters Pat (Johnny) Hasty of Hayes, Va.; Christine (Robert) Hunt of West Point, Va. and Karilene Kruse also of West Point, Va. and sister-in-law Gloria Rivera-O’Ferrall of Peachtree City.

June H. Clemans, 84, of Peachtree City, passed away November 24, 2013.

A dedicated piano teacher for over 60 years, she taught students in Hapeville, College Park and Peachtree City to love and appreciate fine music. As an accomplished organist, she inspired many congregations, accompanied numerous choirs and performed at countless weddings and funerals. She was an avid duplicate bridge player and had achieved Life Master Status. She was a faithful member of New Church of Peachtree City.

Winter’s soul-chilling winds have already staked their claim on the calendar, and any balmy respite we may enjoy from now until, oh, say March, will be illusory at best,
Time to load up on crisp red apples from the Georgia hills. Time to finish the wood stacked since last summer, time to move it onto the porch on its dry fibers ready to burst into warmth and brightness on a rain-dark night.

Time to gather family close again, to touch each others’ hands, reminding us of old bonds and new dreams. Time to celebrate life.

You can remove the “interim” label now, as Joe O’Conor has been installed as Peachtree City’s newest fire chief.

With his troops behind him after posing for a ceremonial photo recognizing O’Conor for winning a community firefighting award, City Manager Jim Pennington stepped in to make the formal announcement.

The look on O’Conor’s face revealed that he was surprised — make that stunned — by the appointment.

The federal Affordable Care Act, often referred to as Obamacare, will have relatively little impact on the medical insurance offered to Peachtree City employees this year, the city council was told Thursday night.

Starting next year, the city can expect to see fees as part of the ACA that will see costs increase by an estimated 3 to 4 percent, according to the city’s insurance consultant.

The city budgets a bit over $3 million each year for its self-insured plan and has a policy that stops its overall loss at about $3.3 million, said Human Resources Director Ellece Brown.
