The Fayette County Commission last week gave its support to the Fayetteville Tax Allocation District (TAD) redevelopment initiative. The Fayette County Board of Education did the same Monday night on a 3-1 vote.

Board members Barry Marchman, Leonard Presberg and Mary Kay Bacallao voted in favor and board member Bob Todd opposed. Chairman Marion Key was absent.

Todd said supporting the measure would be synonymous with using school system tax revenue for capital improvements of private property.

The Fayette County Commission has approved a $338,000 contract to get recommendations on how to improve the county water system and in particular its water treatment plants in light of a scathing environmental review conducted in June.

A $785,400 bid has been awarded to a contractor to build a standalone Emergency Operations Center for the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

The county’s current EOC is located on the second floor of the county government complex in downtown Fayetteville, a building originally built to be a shopping center, noted Fayette County Commission Chairman Steve Brown.

Volunteers from the Peachtree City Police Department are joining the “Be A Santa To A Senior” (BASTAS) program to collect donations and gifts for senior citizens who face a lonely holiday season.

A Christmas tree is set up in the lobby of the police department with wish list ornaments each senior would like to receive. Participants can pick an ornament, do the shopping and return the unwrapped gifts to the collection box beside the tree.

The 39-year-old Fayetteville resident charged two weeks ago with burglary and prowling is now facing new charges of theft and the potential for additional charges relating to other thefts in Fayetteville.

Nakia Johnson was previously arrested on burglary and prowling charges after a woman at a Rabbit’s Run residence awakened to find Johnson in her room, said Det. Mike Whitlow. The street is off North Jeff Davis Drive.

The woman was able to convince Johnson to leave her home, Whitlow said, adding that the woman’s parents were also in the home when Johnson entered the residence.

Peachtree City will get its first new council member Thursday night, as it is expected to approve a five-year financing plan for $1.17 million to purchase public safety vehicles, computers and other equipment.

Mike King, who won a three-way race for the unexpired Post 2 term vacated by George Dienhart, will be sworn in at the beginning of the council meeting. It also means he will be on the hot seat for decisions at the meeting, as his vote will “count.”

The Adopt-a-Stream students from McIntosh High School and students from Sandy Creek High School’s Key Club combined one sunny Saturday morning recently and collected 700 pounds of trash along the course of Line Creek in western Fayette County.

The 65 volunteers were part of a Rivers Alive cleanup event sponsored by the Fayette County Environmental Management Department and the town of Tyrone. Rivers Alive is an annual volunteer waterway cleanup that targets all waterways in Georgia. This group picked up trash and debris along Line Creek.

A new ordinance designed to heavily restrict sexually-oriented businesses which might seek to locate in unincorporated Fayette County has drawn pushback from some residents who are concerned such businesses might come near their neighborhood.

The matter was the topic of several citizens addressing the county commission Nov. 14 including a group of a dozen members of Liberty Baptist Church as well as representatives from the North Fayette Community Association.

Runoff election pits Councilwoman Fleisch vs. former mayor Logsdon

Advance voting has begun for the runoff election to determine who Peachtree City’s mayor will be for the next four years.

Voters who have made up their minds may cast their ballot Wednesday through Friday of this week and Monday through Wednesday of next week by dropping by the Peachtree City Library between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

If you can’t “early vote” by Wednesday, Nov. 27, you’ll have to wait until election day on Tuesday, Dec. 3 and head to your regular polling place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
