Tyrone WWII veteran, 101, addresses Newnan group

The West Georgia Chapter of the Georgia Power Ambassadors on Nov. 11 honored veterans at the organization’s meeting in Newnan. The guest speaker at the meeting was 101-year-old Tyrone resident Lamar Wallace, a veteran of World War II.

As veterans arrived for the meeting at Wesley Woods in Newnan, they were thanked for their service. There were almost 30 veterans in attendance. Each was introduced and their branch of service was announced, said organization spokesperson Theresa Kinzly.

Veterans commission briefs Coweta-Fayette Rotarians on mission, goals

Malcolm Jackson and Joe Brooks can always be counted on to keep the sacrifices of members of the military and the memories of that service alive in the minds of Coweta County residents. Their mission continued on Veterans Day as the co-chairs of the Coweta Commission on Veterans Affairs (CCOVA) provided information on some of the organization’s activities with members of the Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club.

‘Communities in Schools’ returns to Coweta to help ‘at risk’ students

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Georgia Director Neil Shorthouse recently provided the Newnan Rotary Club with information on efforts by the organization to serve at-risk students. The program is expected to be reinstated in Coweta in 2014.

Shorthouse said the CIS goal is to increase high school graduation and reduce dropout rates. Shorthouse thanked local leaders for their efforts to reinstate Coweta’s Communities in Schools program.

Imker parodies Obamacare, seeks impact on Peachtree City health insurance plan

Peachtree City staff are slated to present a report to the City Council at its Nov. 21 meeting about how the federal Affordable Care Act, often referred to as Obamacare, will impact the city’s bottom line in the future.

Councilman Eric Imker on Nov. 7 asked for the presentation, saying the city needed to be ready to react to the changes as necessary.

“It’s a very serious issue for our citizens: how much it’s going to cost us out of our pocket that we’re going to have to add to the general fund to take care of our requirements to meet the healthcare act,” Imker said.

Rezoning OK’d for new company coming to Panasonic campus

A rezoning that will make way for a new company and an estimated 200 “high-paying” jobs was approved earlier this month by the Peachtree City Council.

The rezoning will allow Panasonic North America to split off part of its existing 60-acre campus to make room for a supplier that will be investing upwards of $1 million to upgrade the facilities with new equipment.

Sandy Creek 63, Cedartown 10

It took exactly 17 seconds for the Sandy Creek Patriots to shift gears into playoff mode.

That’s how long it took Javon Jackson to return the game’s opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown. From there the Patriots never looked back, opening up a 42-3 lead in the second quarter en route to a 63-10 win over the Cedartown Bulldogs in the first round of the AAAA state playoffs.

Next Friday Sandy Creek will host Chestatee, who defeated Grady in its first-round game.

Christopher Ward VanOrden, 48

Christopher Ward VanOrden, 48, died suddenly Monday, November 11, 2013.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Jane VanOrden.

The youngest of five children, Chris is survived by his sisters, Amy (David) Tratt, Cathy and Linda VanOrden; brother, KC (Desiree) VanOrden; as well as former wife, Lori VanOrden and her daughter and her grandchildren.
