The Starr’s Mill High School Debate team has gotten off to a strong start, with multiple wins at Griffin, Roswell, and Warner Robins, with an exceptionally strong showing at the Johnson High School tournament, reports Amanda Nails. The results were as follows:

Novice Public Forum: Darius Cooper and Liam O’Connell, 4th Place; Liam O’Connell, 3rd Place Speaker Award.

Varsity Public Forum: Maud deGroot and Vicki Justice, 2nd Place; Maud deGroot, 4th Place Speaker Award; Vicki Justice, 3rd Place Speaker Award.

The Landmark War Eagles came home from Carrollton Saturday afternoon with the Georgia High School Association’s Class A Private state championship in boys’ cross-country.

It was the boys’ eighth state championship in cross-country since 1995. The team has also finished as state runner-up five times.

ELCA 35, Landmark 0: It was expected by many to be a down-to-the-wire fight for the Region 5-A crown. Indeed, up to a week ago, it was projected to be a matchup of unbeaten teams.

But after losing by one point last week to Holy Innocents, the Landmark War Eagles hosted the top-ranked Chargers of Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, and the defending state champions lived up to their billing.

Racing to a 21-0 lead before the end of the first quarter and never looking back, the Chargers cruised to victory and finished the regular season with a 10-0 record. Landmark fell to 8-2.

Mike Bosma (R) of the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force accepted a proclamation issued by Mayor Don Haddix on the occasion of the CAF’ hosting the city’s Veterans Day ceremony today (Nov. 9) at its facility on Falcon Field. The ceremony starts at 11 a.m. but will be preceeded by an open house at 9 a.m. with WWII and Korean War Aircraft on display alongside vintage military vehicles and Vietnam War-era helicopters from the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation. At 10 a.m. music will begin from Bombshells United and Music Alive. The guest speakers at the 11 a.m. ceremony are Maj. Gen.

This Saturday, Nov. 9, veterans of the Vietnam War will be recognized at Peachtree City’s 2013 Veterans Day Observance hosted by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing. The program will be held during the flying museum’s third annual Veterans Day Open House from 9 a.m.-noon. The open house and program is free to the public.

 The open house begins at 9 a.m. with tours of the CAF Dixie Wing Historical Airpower Facility museum and workshop where aircraft are restored and maintained.

Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions regarding current projects and education exhibits.

Vivienne Cron Bell, 85 of Peachtree City, Ga., formerly of Oldsmar, Fla. & Monroe, Mich. passed away on November 5, 2013.

She was born April 22, 1928 in Detroit, Mich. to Herman and Jessie Senkel. She was married to Robert Cron of Monroe, Mich. and John Bell of Connecticut.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert of 45 years, and John Bell.

Survivors include her son Alan Cron and wife Linda; daughter Robin Brennison and husband Tom; grandchildren Jeff Cron, Jessica Hynum, Mike Brennison and Steve Brennison, and great grandchild Lucy Hynum.

Sandra Carter Backus, 72, died of pancreatic cancer in Peachtree City, Ga. on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. She was diagnosed on October 25, 2013.

Sandra Carter Backus was born in Presque Isle, Maine on November 11, 1940, and she graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1957.

Growing up, Sandee was a wonderful dancer, ice skater, and even worked as a roller skating waitress in the 1950ís.

When I was a younger man, just beginning my ministry, an older gentleman took me under his wing and gave me a warning and some advice. He said, “The profession you are entering means that you are going to receive more criticism than you can possibly imagine.” That was the warning.

The truth is that I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn’t attend church on a regular basis until the summer of my 15th year and, even then, I attended alone, either walking or hitching a ride to the church a couple of miles away.

Let me be the first, at the start of this holiday season, to apologize to all the moms out there. I really didn’t have a clue. Then again, I do have somewhat of an excuse – I’m a Neanderthal.
By now, at tender age of 55, you think I’d know, but alas, I didn’t. Now I’m beginning to understand. The role of mom is just about impossible. And that’s on a good day.

“Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.” It would be safe to say that over the next six weeks the preceding sentence will be read to children more than any other.

Fayette County last week lost the woman who was arguably the county’s oldest resident. Frances M. Kolts passed away Oct. 28 at the age of 107.

Kolts’ daughter ”Reenie” Sullivan said her mother was a person who was always optimistic and always saw the good in people.

A Peachtree City resident for the past 10 years, Ms. Kolts moved to the city to be close to her daughter and son-in-law and to her grandchildren who live in Marietta, Sullivan said.
