BoE wins dismissal of Starr’s Mill student’s lawsuit about use of Facebook photo

A former Starr’s Mill High School student’s lawsuit against the Fayette County Board of Education over the use of a Facebook photo she posted has been dismissed in federal court.

U.S. District Judge Timothy C. Batten ruled that because plaintiff Chelsea Chaney posted it to her Facebook page, thus allowing others access to it, she had no reasonable expectation of privacy under federal law.

Holyfield mansion, Fayette’s largest, on the auction block

Fayette’s largest home is up for auction. The mansion that was once the residence of heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield will go on auction in mid-November and carries a starting bid of $2.5 million.

The one-of-a-kind home — at more than 48,000 sq. ft. on nearly 105 acres along Ga. 279 in north Fayette County — looks more like a palace than a house. It was listed on Redfin.com with an asking price of $7.9 million. But now at auction, the residential behemoth requires an opening bid of only $2.5 million.

Union Jack flies atop Pinewood soundstage

It took more than two centuries, but the British Union Jack is flying again on Fayette County soil. That flag, along with the American flag and the job site flag designating the various developers, was hoisted last week to the roof of one of the soundstages at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in a “topping out” ceremony to signify the placement of the tallest portion of the 65-foot building.

Gov. Deal pins ‘Deal of Year’ on Pinewood

The Georgia Economic Developers Association (GEDA) on Monday presented Pinewood Atlanta Studios and the Fayette County Development Authority (FCDA) with the 2013 Deal of the Year Award in the “Large Community” category.

Gov. Nathan Deal was on hand to recognize company and community representatives at GEDA’s Annual Awards Ceremony held at the Macon Marriott City Center.

F’ville’s Books Down South festival is Saturday

More than 40 local and regional authors, including several New York Times bestsellers, are participating in Books Down South, A Festival for Readers and Writers, on Saturday, Oct. 26, in the former River’s Elementary School at the intersection of Sandy Creek Road and Veterans Parkway in Fayetteville (map below).

Grady Ave. developer told: ‘No apartments’

Developers for the proposed mixed residential development on Grady Avenue in Fayetteville were expected to ask the City Council on Oct. 17 to agree to have the potential development return for a full review by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission. The council agreed, but with the proviso that the new re-worked proposal come with approximately 150 townhomes and cottages and no apartments.

China Cafe robbery suspect shoots himself before capture

Faced with a potential murder charge for participating in the Oct. 11 armed robbery and shootout at the China Cafe in Fayetteville, Leandro Bernard Johnson, 27, surely knew his days as a free man were over.

Instead of surrendering to a group of armed marshals Tuesday morning, Johnson ended his own life with a single gunshot wound to the head, officials said.

His lifeless body, a handgun laying beside it, was found in the closet of a relative’s apartment in Covington, according to U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force Supervisor Jim Joyner.

Fayette teachers’ pay to be restored?

With news of more money in the Fayette County School System’s bank account than expected — 15 times more — a lot of teachers want their pay restored to pre-recession levels.

Maybe, partially, says Superintendent Jody Barrow, but let’s go slow.

There are about 1,346 teachers, part of the approximately 3,200 system employees, according to system spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach.

The Game of the Century

It was a cold Friday night in November. Two high school teams were about to take the field in the last regular game of the season.

One of the teams had experienced a terribly disappointing year. During their first nine games, they had suffered defeat in eight of them. Their only win came over a team that had a worse record than they did.

The opposing team was play-off bound and had a history of being a formidable team.

Thus did the McIntosh Chiefs (1-8-0) of Peachtree City host the Newnan Cougars (6-3-0). The year was 1989.

Sense of humor keeps pastors laughing

During a flight between New York and Chicago the captain announced, “Our number four engine has just been shut off because of mechanical trouble. There is nothing to worry about, however. We can still finish the flight with just three engines. Besides, you will be reassured to know that we have four pastors on board.”

One passenger called the flight attendant and said, “Would you please tell the captain that I would rather have four engines and three pastors on board.”
