MLK celebration is next Monday

Themed, “Advancing the Call for Civility and Civil Rights” the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP in partnership with the Fayette County Board of Education will present the 9th annual parade and subsequent 13th annual commemorative program in celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday holiday Jan. 20.

The keynote speaker is Julius Pryor III. Pryor is a leading edge thinker, strategic consultant, author and speaker.

Whatever happened to…?

This column originally ran in April, 1996.

Not many of today’s Peachtree City residents remember a time when we did not have a real police department. Our earliest policing came from the Sheriff’s Office — the county supplied a car and support; local businesses paid for a deputy.
Granted, he didn’t have much to do, but people felt good knowing he was out there.

Ralph Jones was mayor and Chip Conner on city council when the city began developing its own department, and by the time Chip became mayor, in 1970, we were well on our way.

Whitewater is moving down a class for athletics

One major change is on the horizon for high school sports in Fayette County with the adoption of the Georgia High School Association’s new classifications for 2014-2016.

The changes, which take place every two years, were scheduled to be voted on yesterday in Macon after final appeals were heard. None of the Fayette schools appealed.
McIntosh and Starr’s Mill will remain in Region 4-AAAAA, which will still be divided into subregions. Their rivals in Subregion A will be Northgate, Morrow, Mundy’s Mill, Drew and Forest Park. In

Panthers win swim meets

Starr’s Mill won the men’s and women’s portions of the county swim meet last Friday night, besting McIntosh by a slim margin in both.
Whitewater and Our Lady of Mercy finished third and fourth, respectively, across the board. Sandy Creek came in fifth on the men’s side, while Fayette County had the fifth-place women’s squad.

Here are the winners in each event:
Men’s 200 medley relay – Starr’s Mill (Robbie Scott, Junham Lee, John Michael Hall, Austin Palmer).
Women’s 200 medley relay – Starr’s Mill (Johanna Goldblatt, Ana Hammond, Rachel Goldblatt, Donna Blaum).

Boil water advisory issued for PTC subdivision

Residents of the Coventry subdivision in Peachtree City are being advised to boil their drinking water following a water line break in the subdivision today.

While the water system flushes chlorinated water through the lines following repairs, the boil water advisory is a further precaution against pathogens required by the state Environmental Protection Division, according to Water System Director Lee Pope.

Fla. man arrested in PTC molestation case

A Florida man was arrested by Peachtree City police on Jan. 12 on charges of child molestation and numerous other offenses involving a 13-year-old girl.

Joseph Lundstrom, 30, of Middleburg, Florida, is charged with two counts of child molestation, two counts of sexual battery, enticing a child for indecent purposes, furnishing obscene materials to a child, computer exploitation of a child, open container, loitering and prowling and suspended license, according to department spokesman Mark Brown.
