Veteran: Pearl Harbor attack sparked patriotism in America

Saturday morning, a contingent of local residents gathered at the American Legion log cabin in Fayetteville to remember the nearly 2,400 people who were killed or injured in the Dec. 7, 1941 surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

The guest speaker was local resident and WWII veteran Ardon Smith, who remembered getting help to doctor his birth certificate in order to join the military, as so many Americans at the time had rushed to sign up to join the war effort out of a feeling of patriotism.

Budget crunch looms for new PTC mayor

Last week’s runoff election for the mayor’s post in Peachtree City ended with current Councilwoman Vanessa Fleisch wrapping up the win with 72 percent of the vote over challenger and former Mayor Harold Logsdon.

Fleisch earlier on election day had arranged to meet with city staff the next day on the offhand chance she might win, and thus her unofficial work as mayor had begun.

Fleisch will be the city’s first female mayor. The city has not yet certified the election results and Fleisch won’t be installed as mayor until Jan. 1.

Thank you, church musicians

Yes, as Christmas approaches, let’s take a moment to stop and thank all of you church musicians for all the wonderful blessings you add to our celebration of Christ’s birth. Without the music of the faith which you bring us, we surely confess that the season would be something far less meaningful than it is. And certainly you bless us all year long in every season and occasion with your precious gifts of sacred music.
