As a Christian and someone who considers it a privilege to live in this country, I find myself being drawn into questions of politics and asking myself this very question: does faith, in general, and Christianity in particular, have any place in politics?

Honestly, I don’t have a concrete answer. I am at the point where I am trying to understand what appears to me to be a deliberate abstinence of many Christians and churches from politics all together.

BOYS BASKETBALL:

LANDMARK moved to 4-0 with an 82-58 win Nov. 26 over Hebron.

GIRLS BASKETBALL:

LANDMARK edged Our Lady of Mercy 62-61 Nov. 25. Joy Stucker scored 24 points while Diamond Smith added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jillian Price and Abby Johns scored 9 each. The next night the Lady War Eagles lost 45-43 to Hebron, as Stucker led the team with 13 and Johns scored 9. The Lady War Eagles are 2-3 on the season.

New York City police authorities are investigating a series of unprovoked physical attacks in public places on people who are Jewish, in the form of what is called “the knockout game.”

The way the game is played, one of a number of young blacks decides to show that he can knock down some stranger on the streets, preferably with one punch, as they pass by. Often some other member of the group records the event, so that a video of that “achievement” is put on the Internet, to be celebrated.

I will be the first to acknowledge that there is much to be thankful for about life in America, especially when compared to those beyond our borders whose daily lives are marked by war, hunger and disease. Despite our kvetching, grumbling and complaining, most Americans have it pretty good compared to less fortunates the world over.

Still, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that all of our so-called blessings will amount to little more than gilding on a cage if we don’t safeguard the freedoms on which this nation was founded.

When we reflect on Christmas, we think of the emphasis on shopping and the many exciting things associated with the holiday season. Early on, such as days like we are experiencing now, you can look out your window and see the leaves falling.

Falling leaves this time of the year remind you of October when they turned and gave us that splendor, which goes away all too quickly. This year, however, the color seemed to stay with us longer than I can remember. This past Thanksgiving, there were a few trees here and there which retained their color.

The announcement that the Atlanta Braves are abandoning Turner Field in downtown Atlanta for a location in the suburbs was a shock to almost everybody. There are many questions that must be answered, most important among them being how much of the $302 million in “public” funding will come from Cobb County taxpayers.

Mama had great stories. My favorite was the only one I asked often for her to repeat. It has become something of an anthem in my life.

She grew up in the 1930s Appalachians where life was remote and simple but meaningful. She told the story of a simple-minded cousin named Henry who was sent by his parents to visit other members of the family.

It was a journey of several hours on foot so it required that he stop and have a meal with another family. In a burlap sack, Henry toted a baby pig which his daddy had instructed that he should give to Henry’s aunt and uncle as a gift.

Contrary to what a lot of the citizenry thinks, my opinion is that a lot has happened recently in the nation’s capital.

There have been charges of incompetence against the presidency for the “disastrous” roll out of the ACA. There was a slight change in the Senate’s tradition of a minority of members filibustering the activities of the majority and the executive branch. There were also other lower decibel rumblings. All are good and well, showing that our elected representatives are doing the people’s work.
