Fayette Visioning supporters talk funding, goals

The Fayette Visioning Initiative is well underway, with a steering committee of 40 and a recently completed public survey with more than 1,450 people providing input on Fayette County’s needs for the future. So who is funding the initiative and exactly what kind of influence does the steering committee hold as the visioning process continues to unfold?

Fayette County Chamber of Commerce President Virginia Gibbs was asked about the initiative’s income and expenses: Where do the funds come from and who is giving money for the effort?

Big Wieland rezoning may depend on MacDuff Pkwy.

Two rezoning proposals that would add 238 homes on 104 acres off MacDuff Parkway were vetted Monday night by the Peachtree City Planning Commission.

One plan from John Wieland Homes calls for 204 homes on an 87-acre tract currently zoned for industrial use; the other is for 34 homes on a 17-acre parcel that was once set aside for a future elementary school in the Centennial subdivision.

Finalists named for Fayette Teacher of the Year

It is a “first” for the Fayette County Teacher of the Year program: all three finalists teach elective subjects: drama, music, and business/computer science.
This year’s finalists are David Spearman, drama, Starr’s Mill High; Kelly Jackson, music, Crabapple Lane Elementary; and Alexandra Vlachakis, business/computer science, Sandy Creek High.

Fayette iced in Wed., so schools are closed Wed., Thurs.

Fayette schools closed Wednesday and Thursday, with winter break starting Friday; road pre-treatment problematic

Fayette County School System spokesperson Melinda Berry-Dreisbach on Tuesday afternoon said schools will be closed for students and staff on Wednesday and Thursday. All extra-curricular activities for the two-day period have also been cancelled, she said.

Winter break was already scheduled beginning Friday.

The National Weather Service Tuesday morning issued a winter storm warning for north and central Georgia, including the Fayette and Coweta areas. Beginning Tuesday night, the forecast called for a mixture of rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow.

Coweta schools to open Friday

The Coweta County School System announced Thursday night that all schools will be open for normal operating hours on Friday, February 14.

Coweta County school bus drivers rode their regular routes Thursday afternoon, to check for any trouble areas. What few were found were addressed with the help of the Coweta County government, said school system spokesman Dean Jackson.

Traffic lights, power lines down at PTC’s major intersection

UPDATE 11:36 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 — Winter weather has brought down the traffic signal at Ga. highways 54 and 74, normally Peachtree City’s busiest intersection.

Motorists should completely avoid the area as live power lines are down as well, according to the Peachtree City Police Department.

The police department posted the info on Facebook around 10:30 p.m. tonight.

The police department itself has lost outside power and is working on emergency backup power.

Numerous officers have been called in to work along with volunteers from the auxiliary police force.

PTC family escapes injury from tree crashing into their house

James Evans’ wife Jami and daughter Lillian narrowly escaped serious injury Wednesday afternoon when a pine tree, weighted down with ice, came crashing into the wall outside the room where they were watching television.

Evans — who lives on Hip Pocket Road in Peachtree City — took photos and tells the story:

State wrestling tournament postponed

The Georgia High School Association announced Wednesday that the state wrestling tournament, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed a week.

“The GHSA has been monitoring the weather conditions and there remains the possibility of more ice and snow in many parts of the state,” according to a statement on the GHSA web site. “We agree with the school systems that the safety of students, athletes and their supporters must be a major consideration when making decisions and support them in their efforts.”

PTC police officers on front lines of ice storm cleanup

The Citizen’s John Munford reports Peachtree City police officers warn that Peachtree Parkway North was starting to get slick by 1 p.m. Wednesday. Officers are working with the city’s Public Works department to help keep roads cleared of downed tree limbs, as shown in this photo from the P.D.’s Facebook page. Downed power lines are still a problem, police said.

Historic ice storm hits Coweta-Fayette EMC service area

Palmetto, Ga. Feb. 12, 2014 — Coweta-Fayette EMC line crews are working around the clock to restore power to around 12,000 cooperative members in Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Fulton, Heard, Meriwether, Spalding and Troup Counties affected by freezing rain, ice and winds from the winter storm.
