State wrestling tournament is this weekend

The stage is set for this weekend’s traditional wrestling state tournament, with a number of competitors from Fayette expected to be on the mat when the action begins Thursday, weather permitting, at the Arena at Gwinnett.

In the AAAA classification, the Fayette County Tigers have the most wrestlers from any local school, with a contingent of eight.
They are Caleb Seller (106), John Axelberg (126), Cody McMillan (138), Kershon Manciel (145), Hunter Seidel (160), Kyle Leinberger (170), Kimani Nasrullah (182) and Christian Ingalls (220).

Lady Panthers headed to state

One local team secured a state tournament berth Monday night while two others were scheduled to take to the court for region playoffs games this week, weather permitting. Games last night were postponed, and Wednesday’s games were also canceled.

The Georgia High School Association announced this week that the first round of the state tournament would be postponed until Feb. 19-20 so that region tournaments could wrap up Monday if necessary. All region playoffs are currently scheduled to end Saturday, but if games from this week are postponed due to weather the schedule would be extended.

In advance of ice storm, GEMA offers safety tips

The Georgia Emergency Management Association is urging residents to prepare for winter weather and offered several tips to aid in preparation efforts.
• Prepare a ready kit of emergency supplies for your home and car and include adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm. In addition to the basic essentials, consider adding an ice scraper, extra blanket, sand for traction and jumper cables.

Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Pastor Emeritus, Trinity Unity Church of Christ in Chicago, will be the guest speaker at The Olivet Church for its Annual Heritage Sunday, Feb. 16. Worship begins at 8 and 11 a.m.

The Olivet Church was founded in 1991 and is located in the heart of North Fayetteville, 877 Ga. Hwy. 314 North between Ga. Hwy. 138 and Ga. Hwy. 85.

Hopeful Church volunteers plan February work day

Hopeful Church volunteers have planned a workday for February and ask the public to “join the effort to preserve this historic Fayette icon established in 1825.” All volunteers are appreciated.

The historic north Fayette church is in bad need of repairs and the cemetery needs clearing. A group of volunteers has formed and has been busy working to restore the church and grounds.

Wills to speak as two receive master of ministry at CTK

The Rev. Canon Robert Wills, Th.D., will be the speaker at the services Sunday evening, Feb. 16, honoring the graduation of two men from Christ the King.

Paul Dickinson, a candidate for Holy Orders, is receiving his master of ministry degree from St. Michael’s Seminary, San Clemente, Calif.

Andy Ellis of Tyrone, an applicant for Holy Orders, is receiving his master of divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pa.

Marcia Meikle appointed senior warden at Nativity

Marcia Meikle has been appointed senior warden of Episcopal Church of the Nativity. Meikle succeeds Debbie Macdonald, who served in the post for the past year. The senior warden is the highest ranking lay member in an Episcopal Church parish.

Originally from Jamaica, Meikle has been a member of Nativity since 1994. She has served as senior warden and a vestry member in the past, and is now beginning the final year of a three-year vestry term to which she was elected in 2012. Meikle, a registered nurse, is a case management educator for Tenet Healthcare.
