Southern superiority

A few years ago, during October, I was attending a meeting in the great state of New York. During a break, several of us from the South (and, yes, I capitalize “South”) were discussing college football.

Lending to the discussion were men representing Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. One man, not from the South, and, in fact, from that dark domain known to Southerners as “the North,” said, “You guys from the South sure talk about college football a lot.”

“Yes, we do,” I replied.

“We don’t do that up here,” he responded.

“No,” I shared, “why would you?

Barbara J. Lucak, 81, of Peachtree City

Barbara J. Lucak, 81, of Peachtree City, passed away January 1, 2014.

She worked for Continental Airlines for many years and also Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Lucak.

She is survived by her sons Bradley T. Lucak (Kim) of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Ronald C. Lucak (Harumi) of Cypress, Calif. and John Lucak (Barbara) of Redding, Calif.; grandsons Thomas Lucak, Orlando, Fla., Andrew Lucak, New London, Conn., Daniel and Stuart Lucak, both of Cypress, Calif.

Miss Starr’s Mill Pageant is next week

The 13th annual Miss Starr’s Mill High School Scholarship Pageant is January 9, 10, and 11.
Preliminary shows start at 7 p.m. and the finals begin at 7:30 p.m. The pageant, which is the annual fundraiser for the drama department at Starr’s Mill, has grown to be the largest high school scholarship pageant in the nation. This year it will award about $7,000 in college scholarships.

By midnight the last glass was finally placed in the dishwasher and all the wrapping paper thrown away. The excitement of Christmas had been replaced by a whole-body weariness that only comes from the holidays. Entertaining of family and little ones are extremely rewarding, but also extremely draining.
With pj’s on and all the lights off, it was time for a long overdue appointment with bed. A good night sleep was definitely in order.

But such was not to be the case at our house. Sleep would be elusive, and peacefulness would not be found that night or any night since.

Gender bars: Females increasingly populate Fayette jail

When it comes to crime and jail time, many people assume that jail cells are predominantly populated with males. And while that is true, the Fayette County Jail during the past year has seen increasing numbers of females occupying bed space. The two-year high for females incarcerated came during July-September 2013 when 303 females spent time in the Fayette jail.

Fayette’s district voting lawyer fees rise to $283K

The district voting lawsuit filed by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People continues to be a costly one for Fayette County government.

So far, the county commission has paid $283,522 to the Atlanta law firm which is representing it in the case. That cost does not include additional hourly charges caused by action of the county’s own attorney nor does it include the attorney’s fees paid by the Fayette County Board of Education, which was also listed as a defendant in the lawsuit.

Shaken baby murder case comes to trial Jan. 13

Defense wants witness to testify via Skype due to medical condition

A Fayette County man charged with murder for shaking a baby to death faces a Jan. 13 trial in the case.

Jamal Rashad Thomas, 21, of North Fayette Drive in Fayetteville is charged with three counts of felony murder and other charges stemming from the death of a 9-week-old infant in the early morning hours of Feb. 4, 2012.

Rep. Ramsey: Legislative session will be ‘quick’

The Georgia Legislature is about to kick off its annual 40-day session, and the theme may turn out to be “efficiency and expediency.”

Rep. Matt Ramsey, R-Peachtree City, said the big chore as always will be to shore up the state’s budget expenses between the year-end supplemental budget and the coming fiscal year’s budget. But looming shortly in the distance is the prospect of politicking, specifically a much earlier qualification deadline in March to run for office.
