From the Great Tree at Macy’s at Lenox Square to the antics of the Griswold family in “Christmas Vacation,” the period between Thanksgiving is known for holiday light shows. This year, Fayette County has three spectacular displays that are drawing visitors from far and away to witness the festive shows.
But where did the tradition start?
According to about.com, the tradition dates back to at least the 17th century when candles were placed on Christmas trees. Still, it took nearly two centuries for the tradition to spread throughout Europe.

Christmas has once again come to the Fayette-Coweta community and churches all over the area are eagerly planning to celebrate one of the holiest Christian holidays, the birth of Jesus Christ. From the huge outdoor Christmas Eve service hosted by Rolling Hills Baptist in Fayetteville to the smaller, intimate services celebrated by the many small churches in the area, most will culminate this gala holiday season on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25. FAYETTE COUNTY defeated McIntosh 73-56 Saturday night at home. Dante’ Sterling scored 32 points and sank 6 three-points, while C.J. Johnson scored 16 and Chaz Berry scored 11.
McINTOSH won 100-88 Friday night against Drew in a region matchup. After Saturday’s loss to Fayette County, the Chiefs are 7-2 on the season. Jordan Lyons is averaging 23.5 points per game and Will Washington has a 16.3 average, while Dishon Lowery is the team’s leading rebounder with an 8.0 average.

Peachtree City will be getting new police cruisers after a $199,290 bid was approved for seven new Chevy Caprice models last week.
The low bid came from Brannen Motor Company, who underbid the state contract holder by nearly $800 per vehicle. It was unanimously approved last week by the Peachtree City Council.
The city expects to spend another $196,000 equipping the seven new cars with video cameras, radios, graphics and other aftermarket accessories. The other accessories including emergency lights, sirens, prisoner cages, radars, gun mounts and a push bumper.

In a rare move Thursday, the Peachtree City Council had to condemn small portions of two tracts of land so they could proceed with a stormwater upgrade project in the Wynnmeade subdivision.
There were repeated attempts to contact property owners to no avail, according to City Attorney Ted Meeker.
The tiny spots of land were needed for both temporary and permanent easements to allow for stormwater improvements to prevent property damage downstream.

Plans have been proposed for further commercial development at the retail center along Ga. Highway 34 and Andrew Bailey Road near Thomas Crossroads. A public hearing in January will include a proposal to establish a national chain restaurant and other retail businesses in a 9,400 sq. ft. building which has been vacant since it was constructed in 2007.

A development agreement approved last week between Senoia and Senoia 268 LLC paves the way for the future development of the 241-home Fieldstone Estates conservation subdivision which will be located on Ga. Highway 16 West.
The unanimous approval by the city council provides for future development of the 206-acre property that is expected to be the eventual site of 241 homes on lots of up to one-half acre.
Fieldstone Estates will be located on the north side of Hwy. 16 and west of the Cumberland subdivision.
