The Fayetteville City Council on Dec. 5 heard a different type of presentation, one that asked for council members to support the attempt to have state legislation called “Liberty’s Law” adopted. The initiative would afford greater protection for horses from those who abuse them.
Milton resident Tim Enloe in the presentation said the goal of Liberty’s Law is to prevent the abuse and harassment of horses while promoting and protecting the equestrian lifestyle in Georgia.

The Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services is urging caution be used with Christmas lights and candles heading into the festive holiday season.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), an estimated 250 fires are caused by Christmas trees and another 170 are caused by Christmas lights and other decorations such as candles each year.
The fire department lists the following safety tips for Christmas trees, electric lights and candles.

The woman who typed General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s final orders authorizing the June 6, 1944 D-Day Normandy invasion in World War II died Dec. 3 in Fayetteville.
Helen Kogel Denton, 91, who kept that secret even from her husband of five decades, was buried in the Jonesboro City Cemetery on Dec. 7, 2013, Pearl Harbor Day.

Last week’s runoff election for the mayor’s post in Peachtree City ended with current Councilwoman Vanessa Fleisch wrapping up the win with 72 percent of the vote over challenger and former Mayor Harold Logsdon.
Fleisch earlier on election day had arranged to meet with city staff the next day on the offhand chance she might win, and thus her unofficial work as mayor had begun.
Fleisch will be the city’s first female mayor. The city has not yet certified the election results and Fleisch won’t be installed as mayor until Jan. 1.

Evensong, a musical setting of the Book of Common Prayer service of Evening Prayer, will be presented at 7 p.m. today (Wednesday, Dec. 11) at the Church of the Nativity, located at 130 Antioch Rd., just off Ga. Hwy. 85, south of downtown Fayetteville.
The Nativity church choir, directed by Charlesworth Gordon, will lead the service. Immediately afterward, everyone is invited to attend a continuation of Wednesday evening discussions on the relation of Biblical texts to the Handel oratorio, Messiah.

The Rev. Morgan Morse Hay has been called to serve as senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City.
Hay is a cum laude graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. She received her master of divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur and previously served as associate pastor of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucker.
Phil Hamilton, chairman of the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC), said, “The PNC went through a process of comparing the candidates’ strengths with the needs of the church. Pastor Hay ranked highest in every area.”
