Shadon D. Gay, born in 1977, of Sir William Court, Jonesboro, for DUI alcohol, reckless driving, speeding and less than an ounce of marijuana.

Lisa A. Hornsby, born in 1964, of Powder Creek Drive, Dallas, for probation/parole violation and crossing guard line with contraband.

Former deputy gets 5 years for viewing child porn at work

A former sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to five years in prison for looking up child pornography websites on his sheriff’s department computer, officials have said.

Harry “Butch” Parris, 69, will serve an additional 15 years on probation after completing his five-year prison term, according to Fayette County Assistant District Attorney Robert Smith. Parris entered a guilty plea in court Aug. 23.

Six years today

Today is Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013. Six years ago tonight, I was consecrated as a bishop in my denomination. It was one of the saddest days in my over 40-year career. Like a soldier promoted in combat due to the death or wounding of a superior NCO or officer, that is how I came to the office of bishop.

PTC woman dies in 8-vehicle pileup in Cobb

A Peachtree City woman was killed Thursday in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 75 in Acworth Thursday afternoon, according to the Cobb County Police Department.

Barbara Phenicie, 71, was the front-seat passenger in a 2011 Chrysler Town and Country minivan that was struck from behind by a BMW which caught fire during the eight-vehicle pileup, police said.

Mrs. Phenicie’s husband, Dale, 72, and son, Jonathan, 38 were treated at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for non life-threatening injuries, police said.

Chopper gives Vietnam feel to PTC’s Veterans Day event

The unmistakable thunder from the rotors of a Huey helicopter provided an authentic backdrop to the Peachtree City Veterans Day observance Nov. 9 hosted by the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force.

The Huey was the workhorse of American troops fighting in the Vietnam War, and the ceremony was a special nod to the 40th anniversary of the end of that war, which claimed more than 58,000 American lives.

New Senoia mayor Owens hopes to extend success beyond downtown area + mugshot

Councilman Larry Owens is the new mayor-elect in Senoia. Though he has been a part of local politics for nearly a dozen years, The Citizen sat down with Owens last week to get his take on issues affecting the city.

Owens has served on the Senoia City Council for 11 years. The city, especially the downtown area, has changed dramatically during the past decade and Owens said he ran for the mayor’s seat because he wanted to be part of the continuation of that unfolding process.

Volunteers sought to help pack HeroBoxes at Home Depot HQ

A charity in Tyrone that provides customized care packages for U.S. troops overseas is seeking volunteers for a large-scale packing event Dec. 2-4 and Dec. 9.

HeroBox will bus the volunteers from their local office to the Home Depot headquarters in Atlanta, and meals will be provided along with a T-shirt in exchange for helping from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., organizers said.

HeroBox is trying to reach a goal of 5,000 boxes and already has donations and supplies on hand for 3,600 of them, said executive director Ryan Housley.

Tyrone WWII veteran, 101, addresses Newnan group

The West Georgia Chapter of the Georgia Power Ambassadors on Nov. 11 honored veterans at the organization’s meeting in Newnan. The guest speaker at the meeting was 101-year-old Tyrone resident Lamar Wallace, a veteran of World War II.

As veterans arrived for the meeting at Wesley Woods in Newnan, they were thanked for their service. There were almost 30 veterans in attendance. Each was introduced and their branch of service was announced, said organization spokesperson Theresa Kinzly.
