King and the Hwy. 54 traffic light

This is in response to Councilman Mike King’s letter to the editor in the Feb. 19 issue of The Citizen.

After reading Councilman Mike King’s letter I can only say this is his attempt to schmooz the way, however lamely, for yet another traffic light along the 54 West corridor.

Am I missing something here? What sane-thinking person, anyone who has experienced the grid lock and colossal inefficiency of this traffic nightmare, could possibly even imagine yet another traffic light let alone suggest “reasons” for one.

Second Surgery

Few family crises tug more at the heart of mother than not being with her child when she is in pain.
Mary had to undergo another operation for a ragged rotator cuff.
Yes, the first one was just last fall, but once that healed up, the other began to make itself felt and she went ahead and scheduled surgery.
Why would a 50-something pianist come down with what is usually regarded as an athletic ailment when she is so careful about nutrition and fitness? And why did this develop in the first place?

Students win at regional Literary Days Competition

Fayette schools dominated the 2014 Griffin RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency) Regional Literacy Days Competition for middle schools, taking nearly 25 percent of the available awards.
Flat Rock Middle students showed their strength in the competition, earning three Poetry Recitation placements in all three grade-level categories: Camden Day took second place for sixth grade, Dresden Day took third place for seventh grade, and Anna Bridgeman took first place for eighth grade.

Lady Tigers reach quarterfinals

The Fayette County Lady Tigers cruised into the quarterfinals of the GHSA state basketball tournament with a 43-25 win over Grady at home Monday night. They will travel to Redan Wednesday.

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers closed out their season Monday night with a 67-43 loss to Effingham County in the second round of the state tournament. They finished with a 20-8 overall record.

Lady Panthers shut out St. Pius

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers soccer team broke open a close match in the second half Friday night 4-0 win over St Pius at Panther Stadium.

The teams were scoreless at halftime but Molly Moroney opened the scoring just three minutes into the second half, assisted by Leslie Logan.

Carly Pressgrove quickly returned the favor, sending Logan through from midfield before a calm finish made it 2-0.

Moroney tallied her second goal of the match on an assist by Lauren Yoss for the team’s third goal in eight minutes.

Golf fundraiser March 13

Braelinn and Sara Harp Minter Elementary schools are hosting a fundraiser golf tournament Thursday, March 13, at 9 a.m. at Whitewater Creek Country Club.

Proceeds will benefit The Leader in Me program, a comprehensive schoolwide initiative which supplements educational curriculum by teaching children (and teachers) the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” from the bestselling book by Stephen Covey.

Both schools are seeking community support, sponsorship, players, raffle items for the event.

Piedmont College goes purple in honor of Southside United coach

The Piedmont College women’s lacrosse team kicked off its second season in February, and this year the girls are playing in honor of Robin Sommers, the founder of Southside United of Fayetteville, who passed away unexpectedly in early January.

“Coach Sommers has impacted countless lacrosse players across the southside of Atlanta,” according to a statement from the school. “He constantly encouraged them to play at a higher level.”

Tyrone Tea Party activist tosses hat in ring for District 16 Senate race

Republican businessman and Tea party activist Marty Harbin announced Feb. 21 his candidacy for Georgia State Senate in the 16th district.

Harbin promised to fight for less government, more personal responsibility, and a better Georgia.

Current Senator Ronnie Chance announced his retirement last week after 10 years in the legislature.

“Ronnie is a good friend and I honor him for giving many years of his life to public service,” said Harbin. “In light of Ronnie’s retirement, I would be honored to represent the voters of the 16th district in the state Senate.”
