Ashley takes state mat title

Alex Ashley of Starr’s Mill won the AAAAA state championship in the 285-pound weight class during the state meet at Loganville High this weekend, winning four straight matches to finish the season at 43-1.

Ashley won the final match 8-3 over Malik McNeil of Cambridge, according to the results posted at trackwrestling.com. Teammate Cory Carter won two matches in the 220-pound class to take sixth place.

Lady Panthers, Lady Tigers advance in state hoops tourney

Fayette teams are 2-for-2 after the first night of the GHSA state basketball tournament.

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers advanced to the round of 16 with a 39-38 win Friday over Grovetown. The game was tied at the end of the first and third quarters, and Starr’s Mill led by two at halftime.

The Lady Panthers are back on the road for the second round to face an Effingham County team that reached the state semifinals last season. Effingham County, from Region 3-AAAAA cruised past Bainbridge 66-41 in its first-round game.

“The greatest challenge” Mr. Kerry?

From CNN — “Saying that climate change ranks among the world’s most serious problems — such as disease outbreaks, poverty, terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry called on all nations to respond to ‘the greatest challenge of our generation.’”

“Climate change,” is, of course, the new packaging for what, for years, has been called “global warming.”

The library

The questions seemed simple enough, or at least I thought they were. Still, the only answer given was a blank look of confusion from the front desk attendant.
Last week, The Wife was doing research at the Vanderbilt Library in Nashville, Tenn., and I had tagged along for the ride. Who knew it would bring back memories from a research trip to another library some 45 years ago? That trip didn’t end well for yours truly.

Genealogy fair offered at LDS church
The Fayetteville Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will present a free Fayetteville Family History Fair on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 2021 Redwine Road, Fayetteville.  The event will feature keynote speaker Roger Hoffman, director of the Newnan Family History Center, and will offer classes on beginning research, Internet research, and overcoming brick walls. Refreshments and displays will be available. The public is invited.

Purses For Promise Place

The Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church, Peachtree City, donated 50 filled purses to Promise Place, a domestic abuse women’s shelter in Fayetteville. The ladies donated old and new purses and filled them with toiletry items, jewelry, gloves, make-up, candy, gift cards and Bibles. Craft and Coffee event set for Hopewell UMC in Tyrone

Hopewell Methodist Women invite the community to participate in their upcoming “Craft and Coffee” event to be held Sunday, March 23, from 4:30 – 6 p.m. at the church.

The craft project will be a wooden bangle bracelet decoupaged with special paper to make it unique.

Each participant will create a one-of-a-kind bangle for personal use or as a gift for someone else.

The cost for supplies and instruction is $10 per person. Coffee and homemade coffee cake will be served.
