Kurt Loder
reviews Divergent and Nymphomaniac: Volume I. Of
the latter, he writes, any movie containing lines like “I’ve always
demanded more of the sunset” and “I’m extremely fond of my hamster”
is a comedy in my book. The latest provocation from Danish director
Lars von Trier is heavy with sex, much of it prosthetically
effected, some of it graphic—the old in-out, in-out for real. (Porn
doubles provide the naughty bits.) But the film is also about fly
fishing, cake forks and Fibonacci numbers, among several other
things, and while it suggests interesting carnal-artistic
connections, giggles are sometimes hard to suppress.
