The United Methodist Church is on the brink of a formal schism
if they can’t figure out how to compromise on the issue of gay
marriage. A large minority within the church are actively trying to
change Methodist doctrine to allow for the acceptance of gay
unions.
This struggle poses the question: How do voluntary, private
organizations change—or refuse to change— policies about matters
that are central to their missions?
