The University of Cape Town had invited Flemming Rose to deliver the TB Davie Academic Freedom Lecture. But vice chancellor Max Price withdrew the invitation, saying there must be limits to freedom. As culture editor of the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, Rose commissioned cartoons depicting the Muhammad, the founder of Islam, that led to riots across the Muslim world and threats against the newspaper and its staff. Price said he feared for security on campus if Rose spoke and said that Rose’s remarks would be divisive.
