Republicans have spent the last eight years huffing and puffing against President Obama’s borrow-and-build policies. They pilloried his stimulus spending on “shovel ready” projects. They have derided his proposals to build China-style high speed rail as big government run amuck. They have refused to raise the debt ceiling to build highways to nowhere. They have talked up a blue streak on debts and deficits.
But now along comes Donald Trump, the daddy of all big spenders, promising to spend four times as much as Hillary to Make America Great Again, and where is the party of fiscal responsibility? AWOL, notes Reason Foundation Senior Analyst Shikha Dalmia. All he needed to do to silence Republicans, it seems, is wrap his big spending plans in a “my airport is bigger than yours” infrastructure nationalism. But far from turning America around, he’ll spend it to the poorhouse.
