Economic inequality: Another view

I write this article, with the permission of the person described in it. It is his hope that those who read it will begin to consider how fragile our democratic republic is.

Not too long ago, my family and I met in the home of a family we were beginning to become fairly close to. While our children played together, we talked, and the conversation turned to politics.

Time for 2013 prognosticator to face the music

Foretelling is risky business, and this quasi-pundit is learning that he who lives by the crystal ball dies by the crystal ball.

My predictions for 2013 resulted in a mixed bag of hits and misses. It is now time to face the music with readers about the accuracy of my revelations in this column one year ago.

Here are the 2013 predictions and self assigned grades evaluating my effectiveness as a forecaster:

Going our separate ways

Here’s a question that I’ve asked in the past that needs to be revisited. Unless one wishes to obfuscate, it has a simple yes or no answer.

If one group of people prefers strong government control and management of people’s lives while another group prefers liberty and desires to be left alone, should they be required to enter into conflict with one another and risk bloodshed and loss of life in order to impose their preferences on the other group?

Yes or no. My answer is no; they should be able to peaceably part company and go their separate ways.

Water system is mismanaged

When I asked the cost of the park at the foot of Lake McIntosh, I was told, “One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

That sounded low, so I read minutes of the Water Committee and of the Board of Commissioners.

I found nearly $1 million in expenses, not counting some roadwork done by county Public Works, but including $5,000 for a bronze and granite monument to “memorialize” about 30 politicians and Mr. Tony Parrott. (You may recall he was demoted following the 2013 “stinky water” and other debacles.)

Don't Worry Folks, The Fed Says Stocks Aren't Overvalued

Remember when the Fed got its Series 7 and Series 63, and was solely engaged in the business of advising on stock valuation? Neiter do we. But that doesn’t prevent it from now openly opining on what it thinks is the fair value of stocks:

  • FED’S WILLIAMS SAYS U.S. STOCKS AREN’T OVERVALUED

So, the implication is one should buy stock then?

And if the market craters tomorrow, the Fed will surely make everyone who listened to this non-voting moron who has made a complete mockery of the Fed’s inflation and full employment mandates and replaced them with the “fair stock value” mandate, whole at the expense of all the other taxpayers, right?

Finally, since the market is not overvalued here, what is the Fed’s price target on the S&P 500, oh unregistered financial advisors-cum-Princeton academics of the Marriner Eccles building.
