Sanjay Gupta Pushes Even Further in Support of Medical Marijuana

Somebody's off the DEA's Christmas card listLast August, CNN’s Chief Medical
Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta completely
reversed his position
on the use of medical marijuana. He was
once an opponent, buying into the flippant claim from government
prohibitionists that the plant had no medical value. Then he
discovered
Charlotte Figi
, the little girl whose life-threatening seizures
resisted all treatments other than medical marijuana. He came
around and even apologized for his previous position, realizing he
hadn’t done enough research.

Now, he says he’s
“doubling down”
on his support for medical marijuana (though if
we’re going to abuse gambling metaphors, I’d say he’s going “all
in”). He’s been continuing researching medical marijuana and will
be airing a new documentary on Tuesday, March 11, on CNN. He
writes:

More remarkable, many doctors and scientists, worried about
being ostracized for even discussing the potential of marijuana,
called me confidentially to share their own stories of the drug and
the benefit it has provided to their patients. I will honor my
promise not to name them, but I hope this next documentary will
enable a more open discussion and advance science in the
process.

Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I substance, defined as
“the most dangerous” drugs “with no currently accepted medical
use.”

Neither of those statements has ever been factual. Even many of
the most ardent critics of medical marijuana don’t agree with the
Schedule I classification, knowing how it’s impeded the ability to
conduct needed research on the plant.

Acknowledging that marijuana’s Schedule I classification is
utter nonsense is a nice touch. Read what else he has to say

here
. He has interviewed several of what he calls “cannabis
refugees” – families who have had to move to Colorado in order to
get access to medical marijuana because they could get arrested for
drug trafficking if they tried to bring it back to their home
states.

What The Russian (And Chinese) Papers Are Saying About Ukraine

Submitted by Simon Black of Sovereign Man blog,

“Putin: Unconstitutional coup is taking place in Ukraine. The U.S halted military cooperation and trade negotiations with Russia”

That’s the headline from a Beijing newspaper– and no surprise that it leans slightly to the Russian side.

Beijing Paper What the Russian (and Chinese) papers are saying about Ukraine

The article goes on:

“Russian president Putin said on 4th March that unconstitutional coup is taking place in Ukraine and Russia will only use the army to Ukraine under “the most extreme situation”. This was the first time that Putin declared this publicly since the escalation of the situation in Ukraine.”

“U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry threatened on March 2nd that the U.S and allied countries will take a series of actions including visa ban, capital controls, economic and trade sanctions, etc.”

“The White House issued this in a joint statement signed by the Group of Seven member countries and accused Russia of violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The White House also declared temporarily not to participate in the preparation for the G8 summit scheduled for June in Sochi, Russia.”

– and of course :

“Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Liu Jieyi called for dialogue of all sides to resolve differences and maintain regional peace and stability. The united nations security council held an emergency meeting on the Ukrainian situation. Liu Jieyi said in the meeting that China is deeply concerned about Ukrainian situation and condemn the extreme violence in Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, Russian newspaper Itar Tass had this headline (loose translation):

“Putin: Those [foreign nations] who are talking about imposing sanctions on the Russian Federation should first consider the impact of those sanctions”

Russian Paper What the Russian (and Chinese) papers are saying about Ukraine

The article goes on:

“President Putin told reporters that the damage to all countries involved is mutual:

“We can cause damage to each other– mutual damage. And this needs to be thought about. . . We believe our actions are fully justified. And any threats to Russia are counterproductive and harmful.”

Mr. Putin added that Russia is still preparing for upcoming G8 meeting.

“If [the other countries] do not want to come, they don’t have to,” he told reporters .

The Russian President also expressed the opinion that the U.S. has historically created its own geopolitical goals, and then dragging along the rest of the world underneath them:

“Our partners, especially in the U.S.– they always clearly formulate their geopolitical interests and pursue them very aggressively. Guided by the well-known phrase, “you are either with us or against us,” they drag the rest of the world along, underneath them. And whoever doesn’t go along is beaten and usually killed,” the President told reporters.

He emphasized that Russia’s actions come from legitimate grounds.

So on one hand, the Chinese are essentially making the West out to be the belligerents, the Russians to be defending their interests, and the Chinese as the strong diplomats who are pushing for peace.

And on the other hand, the Russian papers are highlighting the utter hypocrisy of US foreign policy– it’s OK for America to invade whatever country it likes, but not for Russia to defend its own interests.

Administration Announces Another Obamacare Delay

As
expected
, the Obama administration announced yet another delay
to Obamacare this afternoon. Via Politico:

The Obama administration will allow some health plans that fall
short of Obamacare coverage requirements to continue past the
November elections and through most of President Barack Obama’s
second term.

The decision, announced Wednesday by federal health officials,
extends for two years an earlier decision by the White House to let
people keep their existing health plans through 2014, even if those
plans fell short of the Affordable Care Act requirements.

Without the change, Democrats worried that another wave of
canceled health policies would hit in October, stirring up another
round of controversy as the midterm elections approached.

If you like your plan, you can keep your plan…until 2016. If
your state insurance commissioner agrees.

So, the timeline thus far goes something like this: President
Obama signs a law into effect, promises that it won’t do something
he knows full well it will do, and insists to opponents that it
can’t be undone because it’s the law of the land; then when it
eventually does that thing that he promised it wouldn’t do, and
Democrats start to panic about the unpleasant political
consequences, he responds by altering its implementation using
dicey legal authority.

Upskirt Photos Legal in Massachusetts As Long As Subject Isn’t Partially Nude, Court Rules

Taking upskirt photos of women in public
is not a crime in Massachusetts
, according to the state’s
Supreme Judicial Court (SJC). In a ruling Wednesday, the SJC sided
with defendant Michael Robertson, who was charged in 2010 for
taking upskirt photos of two women on Boston’s Green Line
train.

But the Massachusetts law used to charge Robertson was
inapplicable, the court said, because the women he photographed
were fully clothed. As the law is written, it applies only to
people in private or people who are fully or partially
nude
in public. From the court’s decision:

“We conclude that (the law), as written … is concerned with
proscribing Peeping Tom voyeurism of people who are completely or
partially undressed and, in particular, such voyeurism enhanced by
electronic devices. (The law) does not apply to photographing (or
videotaping or electronically surveilling) persons who are fully
clothed and, in particular, does not reach the type of upskirting
that the defendant is charged with attempting to accomplish on the
MBTA.”

Lawyers for Massachusetts had argued that women riding public
transit have a reasonable expectation of privacy in not having a
stranger secretly photograph up their skirts. “The proposition is
eminently reasonable, but (the law) in its current form does not
address it,” the court concluded.

WTF Chart Of The Day: “Get Stocks Green” Edition

Shortly after 3pmET, the S&P 500 was starting to test the day’s lows with a heavy volume down-spike around 1508ET. That, as we know, will never do to maintain the illusion of vigor and excitement over the new Utopia we are living through and so, as if by magic, VIX was slammed a rather surprising 0.25 vols out of nowhere, dragging S&P back to VWAP and beyond… But the magic didn’t work, the S&P 500 cash index closed infinitesimally red on the day despite this WTF chart

Damon Root: SCOTUS Appears Ready to Rule for Police in Deadly Car Chase

The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument on
Tuesday in a case testing the reach of qualified immunity, a legal
doctrine designed to shield government officials from civil
lawsuits “insofar as their conduct does not violate clearly
established statutory or constitutional rights of which a
reasonable person would have known.” By the time the proceedings
came to a close, observes Senior Editor Damon Root, it looked as if
a majority of the justices were prepared to vote in favor of the
West Memphis police officers whose use of deadly force to end a
high-speed car chase lay at the heart of the case.

Oil Tanks As Stocks Drift On Range-Bound Volumeless Day

Stocks saw their lowest range day of the year so far today – and one of the lowest volume days – with today's laggard yesterday's big winner Russell 2000. Financiasls surged today and Energy dropped to worst performer on the year. Treasuries drifted sideways to very modestly lower in yield even as the USD weakened (led by AUD, CAD, and GDP strength). USDJPY and stocks were generally well coupled once again. Gold and silver leaked higher but today's biggest mover was WTI crude which tumbled back to around $101 (-1.4% on the week). High yield credit spreads flatlined with late weakness but HYG (the HY bond ETF) was notably weak all day. A late-day VIX smackdown tried to take the S&P cash into the green (mission accomplished) and new record highs – but it failed. Not exactly the high conviction, break to new highs push so many had hoped for as everyone eyes Friday's NFP (and ignores today's ADP and ISM Services – and China's Composite PMI).

VIX was slammed to try and save the day green for the S&P…

A low range and low volume day for stocks

As broad equity indices went sideways to lower… The Dow suffered thanks to Exxon and Visa ( accounting for all 35 points between them)…

USDJPY was in charge…

Financials had a big day despite the market going nowhere but energy was monkey-hammered to the worst-performer of 2014…

We thought this might interest some… it's been a mixed year for the fantasy five…

Treasuries trod water…

Gold and Silver rose modestly but WTI was the big loser…

This is oil's biggest 2-day drop since the start of the year…

Credit markets appeared to weaken after playing catchup to stocks though the HYG ETF was weak all day…

We are sure today's lack of collapse will be viewed as extremely bullish… we are not so sure.

Bonus Chart: For the last f**king time!!! No, the fundamentals are not picking up…!
