ISIS Releases New Video, Warns “Fighting Has Just Begun”

The Islamic State/ISIS/ISIL has released its initial ‘rebuff’ propaganda response to President Obama’s declaration of war against the ‘non-islamic’ terrorist organization. The brief video entitled “Flames of War” is shot like a blockbuster-movie-style trailer and threatens US troops and the White House. As Politico reports, the militant terror group vows that the “fighting has just begun” in the minute-long video, which features clips of American military forces under fire and a wounded U.S. soldier being taken from the battlefield. The video concludes as the words “Flames of War” flash on the screen, followed by “Fighting has just begun” and ends ominously: “Coming Soon.” Even more concerning perhaps is al-Qaeda branches calling for all jihadists to unite against the common threat from a US-led coalition.

Brief Michael-Bay-esque video below (warning: disturbing and graphic images)

Al Hayat Media, the English-language media arm of ISIS, posted the new video to the Internet archiving site Archive.org on Sept. 16.

In addition to this, AFP reports,

Powerful Al-Qaeda branches in Yemen and North Africa issued an unprecedented joint statement Tuesday calling for jihadists in Iraq and Syria to unite against the common threat from a US-led coalition.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb urged their “brothers” in Iraq and Syria to “stop killing each other and unite against the American campaign and its evil coalition that threatens us all.”

But the joint statement, released on two jihadist Twitter accounts, called for differences to be set aside in the face of the growing coalition.

“Make the unity of the infidel nations against you a reason for your unity against them,” it said, accusing Washington of “leading a Crusader campaign against Islam and all Muslims”.

“Stop the infighting between you and stand as one against America’s campaign,” it added.

It also urged Syrian rebels to keep up their fight against President Bashar al-Assad, warning them to “beware of being tricked by America… and thus being diverted from your path” and becoming its “pawns”.

So that’s at least one broad coalition that President Obama has managed to create.

New NFL Policy Tougher on Wife Beaters Than Pot Smokers, But It’s Close

Josh GordonThe NFL Players Association approved a new,
liberalized drug policy last week that increases the threshold for
what’s considered a positive test for marijuana. This comes almost
15 days after the league stiffened penalties for players involved
in domestic abuse, and both changes are no doubt moves to repair
the rapidly decaying image of the league in the wake of the Ray
Rice elevator video.

At first glance, that might seem like a step in the right
direction for those who think that beating a woman is worse than
smoking weed. However, the damage-control measures are far too
little and too late, writes Ken Silva.

Helen Dale on Why the Scottish Should Vote ‘Yes’ on Independence

On Thursday the Scottish will vote on whether or
not to remain a part of the United Kingdom. Helen Dale, who studied
English law at Oxford University and Scots law at Edinburgh
University, argues that the Scottish should vote “yes” on
independence. That Scotland gifted the world the skeptical
Enlightenment would stand it in good stead, she writes. Its current
inhabitants may prove themselves worthy heirs to Adam Smith, David
Hume, and all the rest.

This Russian Trend Is Not Europe’s Friend

The cold war is on, literally, because it will determine who will survive Europe’s upcoming cold winter – a Europe with decreasing Russian gas supplies, or Russia now officially starved of Western sources of funding. The “Plan Bs” – Europe has record gas inventories in storage giving it hope it can last out an entire winter without any incremental Russian gas, while Russia is increasingly reliant and hoping on China-based sources of funding. While it remains to be seen just how Russian corporations will react to the recently imposed credit starvation, the chart below shows the steps Russia is now taking ahead of the European winter. Clearly, the trend in Russian gas supplies into Europe’s core distribution hub, Slovakia, is not Europe’s friend.

Of course, Gazprom had a politically acceptable excuse for the trend: “technical reasons.” We assume that not even the Eurocrats in Brussels will fall for that one.

If and when the blue bar hits zero, the cold war will officially have resumed.

Germany Issues 2Y Note At Record Low Yield Of -7bps

Germany sold EUR 3.34 billion 2-year notes to a desparate-for-collateral, safe-haven-seeking, ECB QE-front-running, deflation-pricing market (with exceptional demand – an elevated 2.26x bid-to-cover) for a stunning -0.07% yield… an all-time record low yield issuance for Germany. We have nothing to add…
