For The First Time Ever, China Shows Footage From Disputed, Man-Made Reef

For the first time ever, Chinese State television has aired construction work on the artificial island known as the Fiery Cross, or Yongshu, Reef in the Nansha Islands, located in the contested territory inside the South China Sea.

Fiery Cross is also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan however China has been the fastest in actually settling the reef which it converted into a man-made island in 2014 to which it has deployed hundreds of troops.

China Central Television (CCTV) on Tuesday released video of construction work on Yongshu Reef as part of a news report on the performances of a Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) navy song and dance troupe on the reef.

Buildings, roads and lighthouses are beginning to take shape, according to the videos.

As the Global Times reported, “it is probably the first time that CCTV has publicly released video about the reef,” according to Li Jie, a Beijing-based military expert who stressed that the construction on the reef falls within China’s sovereignty and is aimed at regional peace and stability; ironically it is China’s urgent scramble to “reclaim” the reef that has led to much diplomatic fallout with the US, most recently culminating in the USS Stennis being refused access to the port of Hong Kong.

The Chinese government has justified its rapid military buildup on several disputed islets, saying it is simply defending its own territory, while also condemning U.S. Navy patrols in the area as acts of aggression.

China began to reclaim land on Yongshu Reef in August 2014, and several test flights were conducted on an airport in the reef in January, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Meanwhile, a six-vessel flotilla belonging to the PLA navy’s South China Sea Fleet on Wednesday left a port in Sanya, South China’s Hainan Province for an annual live ammunition drill, which includes simulations of breaking through the blockade of “the enemy” and reconnaissance and counter-reconnaissance drills with submarine forces, Xinhua reported.

Such exposure on reef construction activities and the drills at this particular time come amid hyped-up South China Sea issues and more involvement from countries outside the region, Li said, adding that the naval exercises are part of “a targeted move to improve the Chinese navy’s detection and warning capabilities.”

The flotilla is scheduled to conduct drills in the South China Sea, East Indian Ocean and West Pacific. The PLA Naval Aviation of the South China Sea Fleet and troops on the Nansha Islands will also participate in the drills, along with troops from the North China Sea Fleet, according to Xinhua,  The drills are part of the PLA navy’s annual training, Xinhua noted.

“The flotilla also includes the newly-built comprehensive depot ship Honghu, which can provide support for sustained combat at sea,” Li noted, adding that such capabilities are vital for maritime operations, considering China’s vast territorial footprint in the South China Sea.

Homemade Bomb Explodes At California High School

A homemade bomb exploded on the campus of Southern California school for foster youth according to NBC 7 San Diego. The school was on lockdown for a period of time, but ultimately was deemed safe. Fortunately nobody was injured in the incident.

San Diego County Sheriff’s as well as Cal Fire Officials responded to San Pasqual Academy in Escondido around 9:15am, after receiving word that there was a threat to the school.

After an initial investigation, the homemade bomb appeared to be made out of bathroom products, including toilet bowl cleaner and some sort of aluminum foil, and was placed within a plastic soda bottle. Officials said a staff member at the school spotted the device and picked it up in front of the teenage student accused of making it. The teen suspect then warned the staff member to get rid of it, as it would explode. The staff member quickly tossed the bottle into nearby bushes, and within a few minutes the bomb exploded.

The good news is that there appears to be no terrorist connection. Officials say a 15 year old male student at the school was detained on campus for allegedly making the device, and was booked into juvenile hall for possession of a destructive device.

The True State Of The US Consumer: All Six Retail Companies Reporting April Comp Sales Missed

Moments ago the Philadelphia Fed tweeted something that is actually spot on, namely that the American economy is only as resilient as the American consumer.

Which if one looks at the state of retail companies reporting same-store sales results today, is a problem because they all missed.

As Bloomberg notes, each of six companies, among which L Brands, Zumiez, The Buckle, Costco, The Cato Corporation and Fred’s – that reported April comparable sales missed estimates compiled by Retail Metrics.

Among the reasons given by retailers for the weak comps included shift of Easter to mid-March this year from early April last year, and the old standby, rainy weather.

The worst miss was at Buckle, which fell short of estimates by a whopping 660bps, followed by Cato’s miss of 500bps; L Brands’ Victoria’s Secret also missed by 500bps; on the other end, Zumiez’s April comp. sales missed estimate by just 60bps, the narrowest miss of group.

Investors promptly punished the companies, sending the stock of iconic L Brands Inc., owner of the Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works chains, plunging the most in six years to the lowest level since November 2014.  Others did not do better: ZUMZ -8%, BKE -6%, COST -2.1%, CATO -1%, FRED -6%.

Which should not come as a surprise: considering in the past several months we have seen bankruptcies by such iconic retailers as American Apparel, Caché, Wet Seal, Quiksilver, and Pacific Sun, Eastern Mountain Sports, Sports Authority, and just yesterday, Aeropostale, perhaps it is becoming clear why the state of both the American consumer, and the American economy, is as poor as it appears to everyone, if not those happy few who see nothing but green shoots and “fiction peddlers”…

Muslim Students Want San Diego State President to Resign for Failing to Protect Their Feelings

SDSUSan Diego State University students are furious with their president—and some think he should resign—because he failed to protect them from hurtful words printed on campus flyers.

Members of the Muslim Student Association surrounded President Elliot Hirshman’s vehicle last week and trapped him in place for an hour. They demanded that he apologize for issuing an inadequate denunciation of a pro-Israel flyer. The spectacle bore some similarity to the persecution of Yale University’s Nicholas Christakis last fall, who was surrounded by irate students and accused of refusing to protect them from offensive Halloween costumes. Christakis’s job was to “create a place of comfort” for students, the protesters claimed.

Similarly, the anti-Hirshman crowd maintained that it was his job to harshly denounce speech that offended them. But the speech in question, a flyer, was obviously protected political expression. The flyer accused anti-Israel students of sympathizing with Hamas and allying themselves with Islamic terrorists. It also listed the heads of SDSU’s pro-Palestinian group by name. That’s a harsh tactic—and an obvious example of hyperbole—but left-leaning campus activists often do the same to their conservative and libertarian opponents, and it is simply not the case that putting someone’s name on a list is the same thing as threatening or harassing them.

The flyers are a production of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, a pro-Israel group. Horowitz defended their content in a statement to The College Fix, saying, “They’re not ignorant college kids. They’re willing and committed campus agents of Hamas. Big difference. We singled out the leaders of an organization founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood whose sole mission so to spread Hamas’ genocidal lies about the Jewish state and spearhead the Hamas-inspired and Hamas-funded BDS campaign which is a genocidal campaign to strangle the Jewish state. Calling them innocent would be a insult to their intelligence and malice.”

The students saw matters a different way.

“My friends are not terrorist, and if their names are being posted around campus that’s an issue of security,” one student, Jeanette Corona, told The San Diego Union Tribune. “No student should be demonized. … It’s (Hirshman’s) job to ensure the safety of all students on this campus.”

“We wanted the president to come to our defense as students,” said another student, Osama Alkhawaja, whose name appeared on the flyer.

But Hirshman did come to their defense, as best he could. He sent a campuswide email noting that everyone had a right to make controversial statements, asked for civility, and questioned whether naming individual students was an effective tactic. That’s all he can do. Anything more would have given the false impression that students aren’t free to put up controversial flyers.

It wasn’t enough for the Muslim students, who launched a petition yesterday calling on Hirshman to resign. According to the petition

“It is the Job of the President of any body of people to make sure that those people feel safe and secure but in this case Elliot Hirshman didn’t do that,” said President of National Action Network Reverend Shane Harris.  “Even after we gave him 48 hours to condemn the hate speech on those flyers he didn’t do that which is why he must go.”

Keep in mind that the students who surrounded Hirshman last week didn’t just engage him in a dialogue: they actually prevented him from leaving. When he finally got out of the car, apologized, and tried to leave, they began chanting insults at him.

I can understand why pro-Palestinian students were upset to learn that Horowitz’s supporters had publicly branded them as terrorist collaborators. But this is pure political activism, nasty though it may be. Muslim students have every right to respond with their own flyers, demonstrations, and events. They also have a right to physical safety, and if anyone makes threats against them—or anyone else on campus—the university administration is obligated to respond.

But the sort of protection these students—and so many others—are demanding goes well beyond physical safety. They think the president of the university should lose his job because he didn’t protect them from offense or harshly attack their critics. They want the campus to be a safe space, not for free and open inquiry, but for their own delicate feelings.

Horowitz is coming to SDSU to speak today. I’ll post an update if anything interesting happens.

Former Ron Paul Campaign Aides Found Guilty on Charges Related to Payoff to Iowa State Senator Kent Sorenson

A jury in Iowa today convicted three former Ron Paul campaign aides for campaign finance-reporting crimes after a long legal saga.

Back during the 2012 Ron Paul campaign, state Sen. Kent Sorenson made a dramatic switch from support for Michele Bachmann to support for Ron Paul. It turns out he was encouraged to do so by a $73,000 payoff via the campaign. (Ironically, hitting Bachmann at that point in the campaign likely harmed Paul’s cause by elevating the previously nowheresville Rick Santorum.)

The payments to Sorenson was not properly reported as required by campaign finance law, and this week three Paul campaign operatives were found guilty on charges related to it, after a long, complicated history of indictments and trials and previous failures to convict. (No one involved believes Paul himself was aware or approved of the payoffs.)

Two of the operatives, Jesse Benton, Paul’s top political adviser in 2012 who is married to one of Paul’s granddaughters, and John Tate, his campaign manager, were found guilty on four charges, all related to filing false records to the government regarding the expenditure.

Tate had been running a Paul-associated grassroots advocacy group, Campaign for Liberty, between and after Paul’s presidential runs, and both he and Benson had been higher-ups with a Rand Paul-supporting SuperPAC, America’s Liberty.

The payment was funneled through an audio/visual services company with links to Dimitri Kesari’s family. Kesari was found guilty today on three charges.

Full report today from the Des Moines Register. The Register sums up the dogged insistence the feds had on getting this guys convicted:

The trial was a rare second try for the federal government to convict the operatives after an earlier prosecution last year ended with mixed results. A grand jury indicted the three operatives on several charges that were first announced on Aug. 5, including conspiracy, causing false records, causing false campaign expenditure reports and false statements scheme.

But U.S. District Judge John Jarvey dismissed the charges entirely against Tate and all but one charge against Benton ahead of a trial that began in October.

The dismissals, which left the door open for new prosecutions using different evidence, came after Jarvey found prosecutors wrongly used evidence gathered in FBI interviews with Benton and Tate to secure indictments from the grand jury. Both operatives participated in the interviews after signing so-called proffer agreements that bar prosecutors from using their statements as evidence against them in a wide variety of charges, according to the Associated Press.

Previous reporting here on the initial Sorenson story breaking back in 2013; the initial indictments; Ron Paul’s testimony in first trial and belief it was political opportunism aimed at his people; the initial acquittal for Benton and and the re-indictment which led to today’s guilty verdict

Migrant Rape Epidemic Reaches Austria

Submitted by Soren Kern via The Gatestone Institute,

  • A 20-year-old asylum seeker from Iraq confessed to raping a 10-year-old boy at a public swimming pool in Vienna. The Iraqi said the rape was a "sexual emergency" resulting from "excess sexual energy."

  • Those who dare to link spiraling crime to Muslim mass migration are being silenced by the guardians of Austrian multiculturalism.

  • According to data compiled by the Austrian Interior Ministry, nearly one out of three asylum seekers in Vienna was accused of committing crimes in 2015. North African gangs fighting for control over drug trafficking were responsible for roughly half of the 15,828 violent crimes — rapes, robberies, stabbings and assaults — reported in the city during 2015.

  • Austria received 90,000 asylum requests in 2015, the second-highest number in the EU on a per capita basis, but this pales in comparison to what may lie ahead. Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka warned last month that up to one million migrants are poised to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Europe.

The brutal gang rape of a woman by three Afghan asylum seekers in central Vienna on April 22 has shocked the Austrian public and drawn attention to a spike in migrant-related rapes, sexual assaults and other crimes across the country.

The migrant crime wave comes as the anti-immigrant Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has surged in opinion polls. The party's candidate, Norbert Hofer, won the first round of Austria's presidential elections on April 24, and is on track to win the presidency in the second round, run-off election scheduled for May 22.

The three Afghans — two 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old — followed the woman, a 21-year-old exchange student, into a public restroom at the Praterstern train station, one of the main transportation hubs in Vienna. One of the migrants held the woman down while the other two took turns raping her.

A passerby called the police after she heard the woman screaming. By the time police arrived, the men had gone. The suspects, who were arrested as they were attempting to flee the station, do not speak German. Through an interpreter, the migrants told police they were drunk and do not remember carrying out the crime.

If convicted, they face a maximum sentence of seven-and-a-half years in prison. Due to the lenient nature of the Austrian judicial system, however, they may end up spending only two years behind bars, according to local observers.

It is also unlikely that the migrants will be deported: according to European law, sending them back to Afghanistan would be a violation of their human rights. Instead, observers say, the Afghans will qualify for Austrian social welfare benefits — €830 ($950) per month plus free healthcare — and probably for the rest of their lives become wards of Austrian state.

The assault in Praterstern is one of a growing number of migrant sex crimes in Austria (other migrant rapes and sexual assaults are included in the appendix below):

  • A 20-year-old asylum seeker from Iraq confessed to raping a 10-year-old boy at a public swimming pool in Vienna. The Iraqi said the rape was a "sexual emergency" resulting from "excess sexual energy." The man, who left his wife and child behind in Iraq, said he had been unable to control his libido because he had not had sexual relations since arriving in Austria in September.

  • An 18-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan was sentenced to 20 months in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Traiskirchen. "First he beat the woman black and blue, then he raped her, and then he took her underwear as a trophy," local police said. In addition to a lenient sentence, the man will be allowed to remain in Austria and, after he leaves prison, collect social welfare benefits.

  • A 20-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan was arrested after he coerced 13-year-old girl from the town of Korneuburg repeatedly to have sex with him. The man, who was living in an asylum shelter in Hollabrunn, first established contact with the girl over the Internet. Each time they met in person, he verbally threatened her until she agreed to have sex. The man was arrested after the girl told her parents about the relationship, which had been going on for more than three months.

  • Mobs of Arab migrants sexually assaulted dozens of women in Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck on New Year's Eve. The sex attacks, known in Arabic as taharrush ("harassment"), were similar to those carried out that day by North African migrants in Cologne, Germany and other cities. Police initially denied that the attacks had taken place, but later admitted to lying, purportedly to protect the privacy of the victims.

Those who dare to link spiraling crime to Muslim mass migration are being silenced by the guardians of Austrian multiculturalism.

In April, for example, the Austrian Press Council (Presserat) — a group that enforces a politically correct "code of ethics" to ensure that Austrian media outlets toe the line of state-sanctioned multiculturalism — censured the left-leaning magazine, Falter, for "blanket discrimination" against Muslims.

The magazine's editors — otherwise faithful proponents of European multiculturalism — appear to have had enough of migrants raping their way through Europe with virtual impunity. For the January-February 2016 edition, Falter's cover featured a black and white drawing of five "light skinned" European women surrounded by large numbers of "dark skinned" Arab males. The image evoked images of the taharrush assaults in Cologne.

In a three-page "decision," the Presserat ruled that the image violates the "code of ethics" because it amounts to "blanket slander and discrimination" against Arab men:

"The men are all portrayed with the same fierce-looking facial expression, dark hair and noticeably dark eyebrows. In this way — in the context of the attacks in Cologne — the artist is constructing a prototype of men from North Africa, i.e., the Arab world. The uniformity of the image suggests that, rather than portraying individuals, it depicts a homogenous group whose members all behave in the same way.

"Therefore, readers could be left with the impression that the sexual assaults in Cologne were not the acts of individual persons or person groups, but that such conduct is typical for men from North Africa, i.e., the Arab world. The image could leave the impression that all North Africa men who are here in Europe fail to conduct themselves correctly vis-à-vis women."

The editors of Falter defended themselves against accusations of racism:

"The fact is that North Africans were overwhelmingly responsible for the assaults in Cologne. This is what took place and we should be allowed to represent it as such."

Vienna is the epicenter of migrant crime in Austria. According to data compiled by the Austrian Interior Ministry, nearly one out of three asylum seekers in Vienna was accused of crimes in 2015. Of the nearly 21,000 officially approved asylum seekers in the capital, 6,503 were known to have committed crimes in 2015, a jump of nearly 50% over 2014. The data shows that 2,270 of the criminals were under the age of 20, a 72% jump over 2014. Seven were under age nine, while 31 were under age 13.

According to Vienna Police Chief Gerhard Pürstl, North African gangs fighting for control over drug trafficking were responsible for roughly half of the 15,828 violent crimes — rapes, robberies, stabbings and assaults — reported in the city during 2015.

The area around the Praterstern station, where the exchange student was raped, has become overrun by shiftless migrants from Afghanistan and North Africa who are selling drugs, fighting turf battles and assaulting female passersby. Police were dispatched to the area a total of 6,265 times in 2015, or an average of 17 times a day, according to local media. But local authorities appear unable or unwilling to restore order to the area.

The area around Praterstern train station in Vienna is overrun by shiftless migrants from Afghanistan and North Africa who are selling drugs, fighting turf battles and assaulting female passersby. Police were dispatched to the area 6,265 times in 2015, or an average of 17 times a day.

The head of the Austrian Police Union, Hermann Greylinger, estimates that Vienna needs around 1,200 more police officers in order to establish order in the capital:

"If we are allowing in our country 111,000 migrants, few of whom have had background checks, then clearly the police must be massively increased. Almost all asylum claimants are moving to Vienna.

We now have more migrants than the population of the city of Salzburg, the fourth-largest city in Austria."

Austria's migrant crime problem is being exacerbated by an extremely lenient criminal justice system. On May 4, for example, a 21-year-old migrant from Kenya randomly killed a 54-year-old woman on a busy street in Vienna by hitting her over the head with an iron bar. It soon emerged that the Kenyan was well known to city police: since arriving in Austria in 2008, he had committed at least 18 previous crimes — including dealing drugs, attacking police officers and hitting someone over the head with an iron bar — but he has repeatedly been set free.

Given the growing insecurity, it comes as no surprise that Austrian voters are looking for a change in political direction.

In what amounts to a political earthquake, Freedom Party (FPÖ) candidate Norbert Hofer won 36% of the vote in the first round of Austria's presidential election on April 24. Hofer — who has campaigned on a platform calling for strict limits on immigration and tough rules for asylum seekers — defeated all of the other candidates, including those from the two governing parties, the Social Democrats and the Austrian People's Party, which have dominated Austrian politics since the end of World War II.

Hofer, who says that as president he will be the "protector of Austria," is now on track to defeat the Green Party's Alexander Van der Bellen, a 72-year-old economist who is opposed to limits on immigration, in a run-off ballot to be held on May 22.

Hofer's meteoric rise is focusing the minds of the establishment parties. On April 27, just three days after Hofer's electoral victory, the Austrian Parliament adopted what may be one of the toughest asylum laws in Europe.

Under the new law, Austria will declare a "state of emergency" on the migration crisis. This will allow Austrian authorities to assess asylum claims directly at the border. Only asylum seekers with immediate family members already in Austria, or those who can prove they are in danger in neighboring transit countries, will be allowed to enter the country. Other migrants will be turned away. The new law also limits any successful asylum claim to three years.

Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka said the new law is needed to stem the flow of migrants and refugees: "We cannot shoulder the whole world's burden."

Austria received 90,000 asylum requests in 2015, the second-highest number in the European Union on a per capita basis, but this pales in comparison to what may lie ahead. In a radio interview on April 28, Sobotka warned that up to one million migrants are poised to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Libya to Europe.

Sexual Assaults and Rapes by Migrants in Austria, January-April 2016.

Gatestone Institute has reported about the migrant rape epidemic in Germany and Sweden. The problem has now spread to Austria. Following are a few cases from the first four months of 2016:

April 29. A 35-year-old migrant from Algeria attempted to rape a woman at a bus stop in Linz. The man beat the woman unconscious, but not before she broke his nose. He was arrested after he went to a local hospital seeking medical attention. It later emerged that the Algerian has a long criminal record, including other attempted rapes, but cannot be deported because Algeria will not take him back.

On April 25, Kronen Zeitung, the largest newspaper in Austria, reported that an "Arabic-looking man" attempted to rape a 27-year-old woman at a bus stop in Vienna. "All he could say was sex, sex, sex," the woman said. The man pulled a condom out of his pants pocket and then dropped his trousers. "I screamed as loud as I could," the woman said, "until the man ran away." She said that city police have been wholly uninterested in her case: "They have not even asked me for my name." After local media reported on her case, police issued an apology and blamed their failure to take her seriously on a "regrettable misunderstanding."

April 24. An unidentified migrant raped a 19-year-old woman in Eisenstadt.

April 22. Three asylum seekers from Afghanistan gang-raped a 21-year-old woman at a train station in Vienna.

April 22. A 17-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan attempted to rape a 20-year-old woman in Graz.

April 21. A 17-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman on a train in Grieskirchen. The train's conductor intervened after he heard the woman scream. The Afghan told police that the woman was lying and demanded an apology.

April 20. Two North African migrants sexually assaulted a woman in front of the main train station in Salzburg. When a 26-year-old passerby attempted to intervene, the migrants punched and kicked him so hard that he was rushed to a nearby hospital. One of the attackers is a 31-year-old asylum seeker from Morocco. The other suspect remains at large.

April 15. A 42-year-old migrant from Slovenia was arrested for attempting to sexually assault two 18-year-old women in Leibnitz.

April 13. An "Arab looking" man sexually assaulted three women at a bus stop in Vienna.

March 24. Two Afghan migrants were arrested for raping a 20-year-old woman in Wels.

March 21. A migrant from North Africa assaulted a 27-year-old woman on a packed subway train in Vienna. The man began touching the woman on her hands. When she got up to find another seat, the man grabbed her and began kissing her on the mouth. Police told the woman there was nothing they could do because kissing does not qualify as sexual assault.

March 12. A 16-year-old asylum seeker from Libya attempted to kidnap and rape two women in Vienna. After the three met on a subway train, the Libyan promised to take the women to a nightclub. He took them instead to an apartment where he attempted to lock the women in the basement and rape them. One of the women escaped and called the police.

March 8. A 20-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan was observed pointing to his genitals in front of a seven-year-old girl at a public swimming pool in Vienna. The pool director and a swimming instructor held the man until police arrived. The police let him go.

March 6. A "foreign looking" man sexually assaulted a 37-year-old woman at a public swimming pool in Klagenfurt after she intervened to prevent him from molesting her four-year-old boy.

February 25. A "southerner" sexually assaulted two teenage girls at a shopping mall in Innsbruck.

February 22. An 18-year-old migrant from Afghanistan was arrested for raping a 52-year-old woman in Innsbruck.

February 14. Six migrants sexually assaulted a 49-year-old woman on a subway in Vienna. Two of the men, an 18-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan and a 23-year-old asylum seeker from Iraq, were arrested as they tried to exit the station. The other four remain at large.

February 11. A 33-year-old migrant from Iran masturbated in front of female patrons at a public swimming pool in Linz.

February 8. A 22-year-old migrant from Macedonia identified only as Ibrahim J. was arrested in Vienna for sexually assaulting more than 20 women in Vienna and other parts of Austria. Among other crimes, the man is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl.

February 6. A group of 28 male asylum seekers sexually harassed female patrons at an outdoor ice skating rink in Stockerau. The migrants then attacked security guards who tried to intervene. Police were needed to restore order.

February 4. Six "southerners" assaulted a 53-year-old woman in front of a grocery store in Spittal after she refused to give them money.

February 3. Three migrants sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl at a streetcar stop in Leonding. One of the men held the girl down while the other two took turns assaulting her.

January 26. A 24-year-old asylum seeker from Gambia raped and murdered a 25-year-old American woman in Vienna. The woman from Colorado, who was working as an au pair (nanny), had given the man, Abdou I., shelter in her apartment. He had fled his asylum shelter because his asylum request was denied and he feared being deported. After the murder, the man fled to Switzerland, where he was arrested after police traced his cellphone. It later emerged that he was wanted in Germany for sexually assaulting an underage girl.

January 23. A migrant from Macedonia attempted to rape a 21-year-old woman in Vienna. The man made eye contact with the woman on a subway and followed her after she got off the train.

January 16. A 21-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan raped an 18-year-old woman at the Prater, a large public park in Vienna.

January 10. A 29-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan tried to molest a six-year-old boy at a public swimming pool in Linz. The mother of the child said: "I noticed six migrants enter the building. Two of them sat down at the edge of the pool for children. One of them began stimulating his genitals while flirting with my youngest child."

January 1. Mobs of Arab men sexually assaulted at least 24 women in Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck.

Trump Picks Former Goldman Partner And Soros Employee As Finance Chairman

In an oddly ironic twist, today Donald Trump announced that he has picked as chairman of his newly launched fundraising operation none other than a former employee of the bank he has repeatedly criticized in the past, and which he used as a foil to criticize Ted Cruz: Goldman Sachs.

Trump announced that heading up his own personal fundraising operation as national finance chairman will be Steven Mnuchin, a long-time business associate, chairman and CEO of the hedge fund Dune Capital. More importantly, however, he spent 17 years at Goldman Sachs where he was most recently a Partner, having built a fortung of $46 million before launching his own hedge fund.

While employed at Goldman, he purchased the remains of IndyMac Bank (now known as OneWest Bank), the Pasadena, California-based mortgage lender that collapsed in 2008. “Notoriously press-shy, the executive endured 2011 protests on the lawn of his Bel Air mansion by foreclosed homeowners angered at his lender’s handling of soured mortgages.”

As Zero Hedge readers are familiar, Trump often critized his main competitor Ted Cruz for his links to the bank because of loans used to finance Cruz’s Senate campaign, and because Heidi Cruz was a one-time employee of Goldman. “I know the guys at Goldman Sachs. They have total, total control over him. Just like they have total control over Hillary Clinton,” Trump said in one debate.

He had no qualms, however, in hiring one of the most prominent Goldman alums to raise money for him.

In addition to Goldman, Mnuchin also worked at Soros Fund Management, whose founder, George Soros, has funded many left-leaning causes. Where it gets even more bizarre is that Mnuchin has donated frequently to Democrats, including to Clinton and Barack Obama.

As a hedge fund manager, Mnuchin is part of a group of businesspeople Trump has excoriated. In August, Trump said hedge fund managers were “getting away with murder” as he touted his proposal to end the so-called carried interest loophole, which gives private equity and hedge fund managers preferential tax treatment.

“The hedge fund guys didn’t build this country,” Trump said at the time on CBS’ Face the Nation. “These are guys that shift paper around and they get lucky,” he said. “They are energetic. They are very smart. But a lot of them—they are paper-pushers. They make a fortune. They pay no tax. It’s ridiculous.”

They apparently are also very good at raising money.

Some more on Mnuchin’s background: starting his career in the early 1980s as a trainee at Salomon Brothers before moving to Goldman Sachs in 1985, Mnuchin was front and center for the advent of instruments like collateralized debt obligations and credit default swaps. He has called securitization “an extremely positive development in terms of being able to finance different parts of the economy and different businesses efficiently.” The pitfalls of the financing method came later, he’s said.

Mnuchin’s father, Robert Mnuchin, was a partner at Goldman Sachs in the 1960s. The second-youngest of five siblings, Steven attended the prestigious Riverdale Country School and then Yale University, where his roommate was Edward Lampert, who would go on to become a hedge-fund manager and owner of Sears.

More recently, in October 2014 Mnuchin became co-chairman of the board of the Hollywood studio Relativity Media due to Dune’s fascination with movies. Dune has provided financing for batches of winning movies, like the “X-Men” franchise and “Avatar,” Hollywood’s all-time box-office champion.

Relativity Media filed for bankruptcy last summer, just a few months after Mnuchin’s arrival. According to Variety, Dune was intimately involved in the studio’s failure.

The money-man and fellow investors in a Dune Capital fund are said to have lost as much as $80 million — equity that is almost certain to be lost for good, said two sources familiar with the situation. And disgruntled Relativity investors privately are questioning how a bank Mnuchin once headed –OneWest Bank of Pasadena – was allowed by Relativity to drain $50 million from the studio just weeks prior to the July 30 insolvency filing.

Mnuchin had left Relativity just days before the company reached an agreement with OneWest to extend the loan deadline and allow the bank to claim that money.

For a self-professed “anti-establishment” candidate, who has repeatedly stated he will fund his own way and is not “for sale to special interest groups”, Trump may have some difficulties explaining this particular decision.

Support For Anti-Muslim AfD Hits Record High As 60% Agree That “Islam Does Not Belong In Germany”

We recently pointed out that Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party was gaining significant popularity as the anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim tide continued to rise in Germany. We then noted that everyone in the establishment will be shocked when the AfD’s polling numbers started to climb higher.

We expect much more such back and forth between the “left” and the “right”, which just like in the US, will ultimately benefit the object the media has decided to target for ridicule, until – just like in Austria – Germany’s establishment is shocked when the AfD’s polling skyrockets in the coming months and leads to drastic changes in Germany’s political landscape.

It turns out we didn’t have to wait long for that to become a reality. In a recent survey for ARD , support for Germany’s right-wing populist party AfD is at a record 15% (+1), closing in on the centre-left’s SPD, which fell to 20% (-1), its lowest level of support since 1997. Angela Merkel’s CDU/CSU bloc came in at 33% (-1).

SPD experienced a loss of confidence across the board (family policy, property trust, social justice).

In yet another poll for Bild newspaper by the Insa Institute, an astonishing 61% of Germans agreed that Islam does not belong in Germany. This result further explains AfD’s surge in popularity, as the AfD reportedly has a section in its new party program called “Islam is not part of Germany”, which is a position that 92% of its supporters agree with.

With the AfD only behind SPD by 5 points in the polls, it won’t be long until the AfD is able to close the gap and become Germany’s second most popular party. An increasingly powerful AfD who shares the same anti-Muslim, anti-Sentiment as a growing number of German voters means that the political landscape in Germany is changing rapidly, and significantly.

* * *

As a bonus, the ARD poll indicates that it’s becoming quite clear Obama’s Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) proposal has found few supporters in Germany, which will put pressure on Angela Merkel not to support it.

47% view the TTIP proposal as having no economic benefit as opposed to 41% who believe the deal will yield benefits.

Stunning Dash Cam Footage From Inside Alberta’s “Apocalyptic” Inferno

The fire burning in the middle of Canada’s oil sands, which as reported earlier has led to the evacuation of over 80,000 local residents, has resulted in is set to trim oil output by about 500kbp for about 10 days, has been described as “apocalyptic.” The following dash cam videos which have captured the reality for some 80,000 local residents demonstrate why.

One Chart Says It All

Submitted by Charles Hugh-Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

People sense the 'recovery" is bogus, and their rational response is to save more money rather than squander it.

Sometimes one chart captures the fundamental reality of the economy: for example, this chart of money velocity and the civilian-population ratio. (thank you, Joseph Y. for posting it on my Facebook feed.)

When the blue line is up, more of the population has a job. (the blue line is the Employment-Population ratio.)

The red line is money velocity, the rate at which money changes hands. (Money buried in the coffee can in the back yard has a money velocity of zero.)

As Joseph noted, the correlation between the percentage of people working and money velocity was strong until 2010. In the post-2009 recession "recovery," the percentage of the populace with jobs rose modestly, but money velocity absolutely cratered to unprecedented lows.

(The one other disconnect was triggered by the 1987 stock market crash, which caused money velocity to dip even as more people entered the workforce. This absence of correlation was relatively brief.)

The correlation between more people working and money velocity is commonsensical. More people working = more household income = more spending = higher money velocity.

But something changed in 2010. Did the quality and compensation of work change? Joseph observed: People started going back to work after the official recession ended in Q4 2009 but they were working for lower pay. With lower pay comes less disposable income, hence the cliff-like drop off in velocity.

Another potential factor is higher inflation. Some recent estimates (Where's The Beef? ‘Lies, Damned Lies, And Statistics’) suggest the gap between official inflation and actual inflation in rent, food, energy and medical care in the past 20 years has subtracted 20% from paychecks.

The four "biggies" for the average American are rent, food, energy, and medical care, in approximately that order. These "four horsemen" have been galloping along at a faster rate than headline CPI. According to the BLS definition, they compose about 60% of the aggregate population's consumption basket, but for struggling middle-class Americans, it's closer to 80%. For the working poor, spending on these four categories can stretch to as much as 90% of total spending.

(If we add exposure to higher education's soaring costs, the rate goes even higher.)

So even if wages held steady, once we factor in "real" inflation, real take-home pay has declined by 5% to 20%, depending on the household's exposure to rent, food, energy, medical care (love those co-pays and out-of-pocket expenses) and higher education.

Another potential factor is the figurative coffee can in the back yard: people sense the 'recovery" is bogus, and their rational response is to save more money rather than squander it. Even though central banks have reduced the yield on savings to less than zero, people are still saving whatever they can.

Data suggests it's all three: lower incomes, higher inflation and a recognition that savings are more important in a ‘Lies, Damned Lies, And Statistics’ economy than more spending.

This chart says it all: real income is declining and the bottom 95% are poorer. No wonder people are socking away what they can and tightening their spending: they have no other choice, even as the Federal Reserve strip-mines their savings.
