Democrats Push $2,000 ‘Survival Checks’ to Make Up for the ‘Woefully Inadequate’ $5 Trillion Federal Relief Effort

reason-squad

The United States government has gone through a nearly unprecedented fiscal expansion to combat the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic and related business shutdowns. The roughly $5 trillion in relief funds approved by Congress dwarfs the federal government’s response to the Great Recession.

You wouldn’t know this from listening to the country’s progressive lawmakers who are now pushing for $2,000 “survival checks” for all Americans to make up for this heartlessly stingy multi-trillion federal relief effort.

As soon as President Donald Trump signed the $908 billion Response and Relief Act on Sunday—which included $600 stimulus payments for both adults and their children, in addition to billions in unemployment benefits, small business aid, and emergency rental assistance—Democrats lobbied for more.

On Christmas Eve, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.), alongside Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D–Mich.), Pramila Jayapal (D–Wash.), Ilhan Omar (D–Minn.), and Ayanna Pressley (D–Mass.) unveiled legislation which would provide $2,000 checks for adults, plus $600 for children. That money would help correct for the “woefully inadequate relief” provided to Americans thus far during the pandemic, the quintet of lawmakers said in their press release.

The progressive “squad” is not alone in being disappointed with this new relief law.

Trump briefly threatened to sink this latest round of legislation unless it included $2,000 stimulus payments (plus some marginal cuts to foreign aid) saw most Democrats jump on the issue, with both Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–N.Y.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–Calif.) expressing support.

On Sunday, Pelosi went so far as to describe the almost $1-trillion-dollar relief legislation she helped craft as “a down payment on what is needed to crush the virus, put money in the pockets of the American people and honor our heroes.”

On Monday evening, the Democrat-controlled House passed a proposal backed by Pelosi to increase the individual payments in the Response and Relief Act to $2,000 for both adults and children. That bill would also expand the number of eligible adult dependents that would qualify for these payments.

Should it pass, the bill would add $435 billion to the costs of the legislation, bringing its total costs up to roughly $1.3 trillion, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

The sudden enthusiasm among Democrats for $2,000 “survival checks” is obviously motivated in part by political opportunism. It’s an easy issue on which to shame congressional Republicans—most of whom remain opposed to higher stimulus check spending—for being stingier than the current Republican president.

According to proponents, it’s also a matter of dire necessity and one that will bring the U.S.’s pandemic response in line with the relief efforts enacted by other developed countries.

“Did you know Canada gave unemployed citizens $2,000 a month for 4 months to help them get through the pandemic?” Omar tweeted. “It’s time for us to do the same.”

The Canadian government’s supposed generosity has been a mainstay of progressive calls for more aid.

Canada didn’t provide its citizens with a $2,000 near-universal stimulus payment like the one Democrats are pushing, but rather $2,000 in monthly unemployment benefits to folks who’d lost jobs or income because of the pandemic. As numerous wonks have pointed out, that’s notably less generous than the $600 weekly unemployment benefit provided for in the $2.3 trillion CARES Act passed back in March, which resulted in some two-thirds of jobless workers earning more in unemployment than they were making at their old jobs.

These comparisons with our northern neighbor are misleading. They’re also representative of how Democrats are choosing to frame the $600 stimulus checks that just passed as the sum total of relief that the federal government is providing.

A casual follower of the discourse on coronavirus relief would be forgiven for not knowing that the Congress passed legislation that includes not just those checks but also $325 billion in aid to small businesses, $120 billion to fund 11 weeks of $300 weekly enhanced unemployment benefits, $25 billion in emergency rental assistance, and $13 billion in additional spending on food aid.

Despite their rhetoric about aiding the destitute with “survival” checks, Democrats are going on the warpath for billions more in spending that will mostly benefit people who are still pulling a paycheck, and likely haven’t lost any income during the pandemic.

When Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) says that we need direct payments to help people pay the rent and “put food on the table,” he’s ignoring the billions spent specifically on helping people pay the rent and put food on the table.

This purposeful obfuscation of the trillions in relief provided thus far should infuriate people regardless of their political orientation. Liberals should be mad at the prospects of money that could be spent helping the destitute going instead to the comparatively well-off. Debt-mindful conservatives should be steaming at the idea of spending an additional $435 billion in untargeted aid during a year when the deficit has grown to a record $3.1 trillion.

Libertarians should be aghast at this attempt to hoodwink the public into forgetting the massive expansion in the size and scope of the state over the past year.

Strip Club Ban on Unaccompanied Women Spawns LGBT Rights Controversy

Interior of Rachel's Gentleman's Club Orlando

Rachel’s Gentlemen’s Club—a strip club in Orange County, Florida—bans female patrons unless they’re accompanied by men. It’s something of a common practice at U.S. strip clubs. But is it illegal? A recent lawsuit argues yes.

The suit was brought by Brittney Smith and Anita Yanes. The two women tried to visit Rachel’s Orlando in 2018 and were denied entry because they didn’t have any men with them.

They argue that this policy violates Orange County’s human rights law, which bans discrimination in public places “on the basis of that individual’s age, race, color, religion, national origin, disability, marital status, familial status, sex, or sexual orientation.” Florida’s statewide civil rights statute bans sex discrimination but not discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

“The pivotal issue is whether local laws prohibiting discrimination supersede state laws that don’t,” notes the Orlando Sentinel editorial board.

The paper is pushing the case as a boon for LGBTQ rights, though neither woman bringing the lawsuit identifies as gay, bi, or trans. “Even though Smith and Yanes aren’t LGBTQ, citing the county’s ordinance essentially puts that local law on trial,” it says. “Not just in Orange County, but in about 50 other municipalities with ordinances that provide more LGBTQ protections than the state sees fit.”

But Rachel’s wasn’t denying Smith and Yanes entry because of the women’s sexual orientation but because of their sex. Rachel’s policy might be bad business, discriminatory against women, or based on outdated and heteronormative thinking. But how can it be discriminating against gay people by applying its policy evenly to heterosexual and homosexual women?

A Florida judge initially dismissed the lawsuit, but an appeals court overturned the ruling on a technicality.

“Orange County was not a defendant,” and “state law requires counties to be brought in as parties when ordinances are challenged,” the Sentinel explains. “Because of that, the [state] Supreme Court declined to hear the case last week. Orange County has been added as a defendant, and the case is moving forward.”

House votes to bump up COVID-19 relief checks. A proposal to raise individual stimulus payments to $2,000 passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday. It now heads to the Senate, where it’s expected to have a harder time gaining approval.

In the $900 billion COVID-19 relief package that passed last week, payments were set at $600.

The House also voted yesterday to override President Donald Trump’s veto of a defense spending bill. The issue now heads to the Senate, as well—where it could run into a snag from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.). “Sanders will filibuster an override of President Donald Trump’s defense bill veto unless the Senate holds a vote on providing $2,000 direct payments to Americans,” Politico reports.

Ukraine Press Conference Explicitly Ties Hunter & Joe Biden To Corruption

Ukraine Press Conference Explicitly Ties Hunter & Joe Biden To Corruption

Authored by Andrea Widburg via AmericanThinker.com,

A video from a press conference in Ukraine is going viral. It is the follow-up to a video press conference that Ukraine released over a year ago, in which Members of the Ukraine Parliament demanded that President Zelensky and President Trump investigate billions of dollars of corruption in Ukraine that is tied to the U.S. The newly released video is meant to provide documentary and eyewitness information about the corruption – and the Biden family figures prominently in the story.

The video is long – over an hour – and not all of it involves the Biden family. This post quotes those portions of the press conference that address Biden family corruption. The gist of it is that, while Democrats obsess about Trump’s purported criminality, despite the absence of any evidence, their chosen standard-bearer is extraordinarily corrupt.

Indeed, I would argue that Biden is one of the most corrupt politicians ever in America. In the past, corrupt politicians have confined themselves to playing dirty in their own back yard, making money from deals with fellow Americans.

I believe that Biden is the first person ever to serve in the highest reaches of government – the Senate and the Vice Presidency – who sold his country out to the highest foreign bidders. It’s an insult to everything America has stood for since its inception that massive election fraud might allow this person to set foot in the oval office.

With that intro, here’s the video, followed by quotations from the video regarding Joe and Hunter Biden. I recommend Nabu Leaks for more information, enlarged pictures of the relevant documents naming the Bidens, audios of phone calls between Biden and former President Poroshenko after Trump won the election, and the full transcript of the press conference.

From the introduction:

At one of the first press conferences about a year ago, we showed bank transactions for hundreds of thousands of dollars to the family of former US Vice President Joe Biden, namely to his son Robert Hunter Biden. The latter was a member of the board of directors of the infamous gas production company Burisma.

Burisma belongs to the fugitive Yanukovych-era minister Mykola Zlochevsky.

The inclusion of Biden in the Burisma leadership and payment for his services is nothing more than a political cover that protected Zlochevsky from the Ukrainian law, namely from the criminal code.

Two foreign witnesses whose identities are protected – Witness 1 and Witness 2 – came forward to testify about the facts of the case. Konstantyn Kulyk, the Head of the Group of Prosecutors of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine, explained what the witnesses offered:

One quote from a statement by a Witness:

All the described financial transactions were fictitious. And a lot of money was paid in Ukraine so that the state authorities turned a blind eye to it.”

[snip]

In the period from November 2014 to October 2015, the Witnesses noticed strange recurring payments that, at the direction of Oleh Nelin (Zlochevsky’s assistant in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine), were sent from the account of BURISMA HOLDINGS LTD, which was opened for the personal needs of Mykola Zlochevsky, in the Latvian PrivatBank AS to the account of the American company ROSEMONT SENECA BONAI LLC.

The witnesses drew attention to these payments since about 20 times the same uneven amount was recurring – $83,333.33 as payment for consulting services.

[snip]

In the period from November 2014 to October 2015, the money stolen from Ukrainians, located on account of BURISMA HOLDINGS LTD with the Latvian PrivatBank AS, was transferred to the account of ROSEMONT SENECA BONAI LLC in the American bank MORGAN STANLEY in payments in total amounting to $3.4 million for consulting services.

[snip]

This is a payment for the political “cover” that Biden provided to Zlochevsky.

The video offers a graphic image showing the flow of money and favors:

Andrii Derkach picked up the narrative. He focused on Joe Biden’s conversations with Former President Poroshenko when Viktor Shokin, a prosecutor, started looking into Zlochevsky’s graft. As we all know, Biden openly boasted about holding up money from the U.S. unless Poroshenko fired Shokin.

The press conference included audio from a November 16, 2016 conversation between Biden and Poroshenko. Biden was wheeling and dealing for influence and money – and conducting foreign policy behind Trump’s back. The men spoke again in February 2017, at which time Biden smothered Poroshenko with fulsome compliments.

Ukraine’s government is gunning for Joe Biden. The Ukrainians know Biden helped prop up a corrupt government in their country and that he profited mightily from doing so. No wonder this video has gone viral.

Cuomo Says Addicts In State-Run Rehabs Next To Receive COVID Vaccine

Cuomo Says Addicts In State-Run Rehabs Next To Receive COVID Vaccine

Even as thousands of criminals across the Empire State (and particularly in the Big Apple) remain on house arrest, or free on parole, Gov Andrew Cuomo is prioritizing another group of institutionalized individuals: drug addicts currently undergoing treatment in state-run addiction-help facilities.

Cuomo said during Monday’s press conference in Albany that residents in facilities operated by the Office of Addiction Services and Supports, (better known as OASAS) will be given the vaccine (along with employees at urgent care centers and health care workers administering the vaccines).

NY delivered some of the first vaccinations in the country earlier this month, and the state is expected to receive another 259K combined doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines this week. Those vaccines were delivered to front-line health-care workers and nursing home residents.

Cuomo explained that addicts in rehab were being prioritized because of the dense living conditions: “That’s where you have a lot of people living in concentration.”

He continued: “Nursing homes are obviously the most problematic because they’re congregate plus older, vulnerable people. OASAS facilities, what we call the O facilities, they’re congregate – not necessarily older – but congregate facilities.”

Police, firemen, teachers and others in public-facing jobs will need to wait at least a few more weeks to get the vaccine but, hey, at least we know the junkies will be alright.

Warner Bros Encouraged By Wonder Woman 1984 Rollout Despite “Very Weak Theatrical Opening”

Warner Bros Encouraged By Wonder Woman 1984 Rollout Despite “Very Weak Theatrical Opening”

Submitted by Market Crumbs,

2020 has undoubtedly been a horrible year for the film industry and movie theater operators as a result of Covid-19.

In a bid to salvage what it can from its 2021 film slate, Warner Bros. Pictures announced earlier this month that it will simultaneously release all of its 2021 films in theaters and on its HBO Max streaming service in what it calls an “innovative, hybrid distribution model.”

“We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for the Warner Bros. Pictures Group,” WarnerMedia CEO Ann Sarnoff said.

Last week saw Warner Bros. Pictures put its new model to the test with the release of Wonder Woman 1984. The film brought in $16.7 million in box office sales, making it the top post-pandemic domestic opening weekend for any feature film. Wonder Woman 1984 has now brought in more than $85 million globally since its release.

WarnerMedia said more than 10,000 private movie theater rentals were booked as only 39% of cinemas in the U.S. remain open at limited capacity. Wonder Woman 1984 is available at more than 2,100 theaters nationwide compared to 4,165 theaters for the first Wonder Woman film.

Nearly half of HBO Max subscribers viewed Wonder Woman 1984 on its first day of streaming as the platform saw total viewing hours more than triple compared to a typical day over the previous month.

“Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend,” WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer executive vice president Andy Forssell said.

Despite topping the ranks of post-pandemic films, the total is a steep drop from last year when Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker brought in more than $32 million on Christmas Day alone.

“This is a very weak theatrical opening,” movie consultancy FranchiseRe principal David Gross said.

“With more than half of North American theaters closed and the pandemic surging, the majority of moviegoers and fans have little choice but to watch the film on television. Early foreign openings have been weak as well.”

Regardless, Warner Bros. Pictures viewed the film as enough of a success to announce it will fast-track development on the third installment of the Wonder Woman franchise.

With the first test of its new hybrid distribution model complete, Warner Bros. Pictures will now prepare for its full 2021 film slate to follow suit.

US Home Prices Accelerate At Fastest Pace Since 2014

US Home Prices Accelerate At Fastest Pace Since 2014

Despite headlines proclaiming there’s no inflation to worry about, Case-Shiller Home Prices were expected to accelerate even stronger in October (the latest data released today) and they did. The 20-City Composite screamed 7.95% higher YoY (smashing expectations of a 6.95% rise)

Source: Bloomberg

That’s the fastest rate of acceleration since June 2014. Home prices rose 1.6% from the previous month, also more than projected and the most since April 2013.

Additionally, a gauge of home prices nationwide increased 8.4% from a year earlier, the most since March 2014.

All cities posted year-over-year home-price gains (all above 6%), led by Phoenix, Seattle and San Diego. Data for Detroit were excluded because of pandemic-related reporting delays.

What’s most interesting is the massive decoupling between homebuyer sentiment and homebuilder sentiment and home prices.

Source: Bloomberg

Just like we saw in 2017, the decoupling of prices from sentiment is not infrequent; but just as we saw in 2018… it always ends badly for prices.

Rubio: Elites “Tricking” Americans Into Taking Vaccine

Rubio: Elites “Tricking” Americans Into Taking Vaccine

Authored by Steve Watson via Summit News,

Senator Marco Rubio slammed US health officials Sunday for assuming that the majority of Americans “don’t know what’s good for them”, and ‘tricking’ people into doing what ‘elites’ want them to do when it comes to COVID.

Rubio singled out Dr Anthony Fauci, noting that the epidemiologist has consistently misled the public.

“Dr. Fauci lied about masks in March. Dr. Fauci has been distorting the level of vaccination needed for herd immunity,” Rubio tweeted.

The Senator added that:

“It isn’t just him. Many in elite bubbles believe the American public doesn’t know ‘what’s good for them’ so they need to be tricked into ‘doing the right thing.‘”

Fauci, like many other government health officials, did a complete 180 flip on masks earlier in the year, after originally advising the public that the face coverings are not effective against the virus.

The evidence still has not emerged to support the notion that face coverings in any way mitigate the spread of the disease, yet Fauci and others have continuously urged the public to wear them, leading many countries to mandate the masks.

Senator Rubio’s remarks on Fauci misleading the public on vaccines came after the epidemiologist admitted to the New York Times that he and other public health officials engaged in “quietly shifting” the numbers of Americans they believe must take the shot in order to achieve “herd immunity.”

“When polls said only about half of all Americans would take a vaccine, I was saying herd immunity would take 70 to 75%,” Fauci said, adding “Then, when newer surveys said 60% or more would take it, I thought, ‘I can nudge this up a bit,’ so I went to 80, 85.”

“We have to have some humility here…We really don’t know what the real number is. I think the real range is somewhere between 70 to 90%. But, I’m not going to say 90%,” he added.

Fauci’s comments prompted a backlash:

Appearing on CNN, Fauci explained away the remarks by saying “I want to encourage the people of the United States and globally to get vaccinated.”

Despite criticising Fauci on his vaccine comments, Senator Rubio himself took the vaccine last week:

Fauci declared last week that he believes holiday celebrations between family members should have been canceled, warning that it’s “just one of the things you’re going to have to accept”.

Fauci also complained that the “independent spirit in the United States of people not wanting to comply with public health measures has certainly hurt us a bit.”

“There are people in various parts of the country who still believe that [COVID-19] is a hoax, that it’s fake — even when in their own state the hospitals have been overrun with patients in the hospital beds and in the intensive care unit,” Fauci said, adding “That’s very unusual to see a situation like that, but that is what is going on in this country.”

Hunter’s Laptop: Computer Repair Shop Owner Sues Twitter For $500 Million In Defamation Suit

Hunter’s Laptop: Computer Repair Shop Owner Sues Twitter For $500 Million In Defamation Suit

Twitter has been sued by a Delaware computer shop owner who says the social media giant effectively labeled him a “hacker” after he was outed as the source of Hunter Biden’s laptop.

John Paul Mac, who provided signature evidence that Hunter Biden dropped his laptop off at the Wilmington, Delaware repair shop – subsequently abandoning it, says Twitter’s actions forced him to shut down the ‘Mac Shop’ after Twitter said the New York Post‘s exposé on the laptop violated its “hacked materials” policy – which they initially disallowed from being shared across the network, according to Variety.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned paper claimed the material for its Hunter Biden exposés was supplied by Trump personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who allegedly obtained it from a MacBook Pro that had been abandoned in Mac Isaac’s shop.

Mac Issac is demanding $500 million in punitive damages from Twitter plus unspecified compensatory damages and lawyers’ fees, as well as an order forcing Twitter to “make a public retraction of all false statements.” His lawsuit was filed Monday, Dec. 28, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. –Variety

“Plaintiff is not a hacker and the information obtained from the computer does not [constitute] hacked materials because Plaintiff lawfully gained access to the computer,” reads Mac’s complaint, adding that thanks to Twitter citing its “hacked materials” policy, he is now “widely considered a hacker,” and has received negative online reviews along with threats against himself and his property – forcing him to ultimately shutter the Mac Shop.

After first citing its “hacked materials” policy for the URL blocking, Twitter a day later revised that policy to allow tweets that discuss hacked material and that the company would now add labels to (rather than block) posts that link to such content.

On Oct. 30, Twitter made another update: The social network said that enforcement decisions made under policies that are subsequently changed will no longer be applied retroactively. “This means that because a specific @nypost enforcement led us to update the Hacked Materials Policy, we will no longer restrict their account under the terms of the previous policy and they can now Tweet again,” the Twitter Safety team said in a thread. In addition, the Post’s previous tweets linking to the Biden stories, which Twitter had disabled, were restored. –Variety

After Twitter blocked the story, President Trump threatened to strip big tech platforms of Section 230 protections, which allow companies like Twitter to moderate content without legal liability for offensive posts made by its users.

Mac may also have a bone to pick with Democrats and mainstream media outlets, who said that Russia was behind the laptop scandal.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff called it a “propaganda coup from Vladimir Putin.”

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) went full tin-foil, suggesting that Giuliani was a ‘key target’ of ‘Kremlin constructed anti-Biden propaganda.’

Headlines in major publications were perhaps even more conspiratorial:

And of course, propagandists are doing their thing…

Which means Mac is being directly accused of participating in a Russian plot. How familiar.
