Steve Chapman on Head Start and Other Federal Failures

Head StartFor
decades, Head Start has consistently disappointed anyone who
expected it to make a real difference in the fortunes of the poor.
A 2010 study by the Department of Health and Human Services
concluded that though there were modest benefits to participating
kids, they soon evaporated. “The benefits of access to Head Start
at age four are largely absent by first grade for the program
population as a whole,” it admitted. “For 3-year-olds, there are
few sustained benefits.” Our elected officials generally agree that
withholding money from social programs shortchanges the poor,
writes Steve Chapman. They fail to notice that for the most part,
providing money has the same effect.

Six years today

Today is Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013. Six years ago tonight, I was consecrated as a bishop in my denomination. It was one of the saddest days in my over 40-year career. Like a soldier promoted in combat due to the death or wounding of a superior NCO or officer, that is how I came to the office of bishop.

Chopper gives Vietnam feel to PTC’s Veterans Day event

The unmistakable thunder from the rotors of a Huey helicopter provided an authentic backdrop to the Peachtree City Veterans Day observance Nov. 9 hosted by the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force.

The Huey was the workhorse of American troops fighting in the Vietnam War, and the ceremony was a special nod to the 40th anniversary of the end of that war, which claimed more than 58,000 American lives.

Councilman Larry Owens is the new mayor-elect in Senoia. Though he has been a part of local politics for nearly a dozen years, The Citizen sat down with Owens last week to get his take on issues affecting the city.

Owens has served on the Senoia City Council for 11 years. The city, especially the downtown area, has changed dramatically during the past decade and Owens said he ran for the mayor’s seat because he wanted to be part of the continuation of that unfolding process.
