Frederick Douglass Hated Socialism: New at Reason

Frederick Douglass is best remembered today for his central role in the fight to abolish U.S. slavery. That is as it should be. But as Senior Editor Damon Root explains in Reason’s April issue, Douglass also deserves to be remembered for his intellectual contributions in another area. Namely, Douglass was one of the 19th century’s most eloquent opponents of socialism. As Root notes, Douglass championed natural rights, racial equality, and economic liberty in a free labor system. As for the socialist creed, Douglass dismissed it as “arrant nonsense.”
