Trump and Supreme Court Justices: New at Reason

At the Sunday presidential debate, Donald Trump claimed that he would appoint justices in the mold of late Antonin Scalia to the Supreme Court. By that he presumably means originalists.Donald Trump

But Reason Foundation Senior Analyst Shikha Dalmia warns conservatives tempted to vote for him over Hillary Clinton because of that promise to think again. Hillary Clinton will be bad for the Constitution and originalism, no doubt. But Trump may well be worse.

And this is not just because Trump is an ignoramus who does not have a constitutional bone in his body, but because his authoritarian agenda cuts squarely against individual rights, separation of powers, and checks and balances. Odds are if he gets elected, which is becoming less and less likely by the day, Trump will have a transformative effect on the GOP, eroding whatever commitment it has to these ideas.
