Watch: Temple Mount Is On Fire Near Aqsa Mosque As Jerusalem Unrest Intensifies

An area sacred to both Jews and Muslims, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, is on fire as a Palestinian uprising across various parts of Israel appears to be in progress overnight

Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is considered the third holiest site in Islam, sits atop Temple Mount – which in ancient times was site of the Second Temple. At least one large tree atop the sacred site is ablaze, multiple social media videos show, after fireworks were shot amid rioting during clashes with police. The area has been deeply contested since the founding of the nation-state of Israel during the first half of the 20th century.

Each side is now blaming the other for starting the fire, with Israeli youth participating in controversial ‘Jerusalem Day’ marches appearing to positively celebrate that a location so near Al-Aqsa Mosque is on fire.

It’s as yet unclear if the fire is spreading, as it could actually threaten the nearly 1000-year old mosque building and complex.

Palestinians are clashing both with police and the thousands of right-wing Jewish settler groups that swarmed the walled ‘old city’ on Jerusalem Day.

It’s being widely reported that the fires started amid the clashes between Muslim and Jewish protesters and rioters.

Inside Aqsa earlier in the day…

Chaos is breaking lose with many commentators noting tensions are on knife’s edge, to the point we are likely about to witness a new Palestinian Intifada.

Meet The Ransomware Group Behind Colonial Pipeline Shutdown: ‘Our Goal Is Cash Not Chaos’

Meet The Ransomware Group Behind Colonial Pipeline Shutdown: ‘Our Goal Is Cash Not Chaos’

Here we go again as we first predicted, the Colonial Pipeline systems hack which took America’s largest fuel pipeline offline is being widely blamed on who else but…Russia – as CNN reports, “A criminal group originating from Russia named ‘DarkSide’ is believed to be responsible for a ransomware cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline, according to a former senior cyber official.”

But then there was this key caveat amid the breathless “Russia-linked hacking” headlines: “Although Russian hackers often freelance for the Kremlin, early indications suggest that this was a criminal scheme — not an attack by a nation-state — the sources said.”

Via Daily Mail

A rare emergency declaration from the Department of Transportation had followed on the heels of the Colonial Pipeline shutdown, lifting regulations on truck drivers aimed at efforts to mitigate the impact of lack of fuel transport in the coming days. For example the emergency relaxing of restrictions allows the truckers more overtime hours and drops prior sleep-time regulations.

So given the escalating crisis on growing fears that the Colonial shutdown could last for much longer than initially expected, the Biden administration is now probing the possibility of a state-linked hack, and again all inter-agency eyes are likely on the Kremlin after a relatively new group called “DarkSide” was named by officials on Monday.

“The FBI confirms that the DarkSide ransomware is responsible for the compromise of the Colonial Pipeline networks,” the agency wrote in a Monday statement. And more on the mysterious group

  • White House officials said at a press briefing that the FBI has been investigating the DarkSide ransomware since October of last year.
  • It’s a ransomware as a service variant, where criminal affiliates conduct attacks and then share the proceeds with the ransomware developers,” deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger said.

But then there’s this:

In its own statement, the DarkSide group hinted that an affiliate may have been behind the attack and that it never intended to cause such upheaval. Like some other ransomware groups, DarkSide offers to sell its malware to others in what is known as “ransomware-as-a-service,” according to the cybersecurity firm Cybereason.

DarkSide further described itself as “apolitical” in a statement posted Monday on its website. The group said, “We are apolitical, we do not participate in geopolitics, do not need to tie us with a defined government and look for our motives. Our goal is to make money, and not creating problems for society. From today we introduce moderation and check each company that our partners want to encrypt to avoid social consequences in the future.”

And by Monday afternoon…

  • BIDEN: NO EVIDENCE THAT RUSSIA IS INVOLVED IN PIPELINE HACK

So once again despite the already ubiquitous “Russia hack” headlines still flooding the internet, the cyberbreach using Darkside ransomware could literally have anyone in possession of the tool behind it.

Multiple reports are now softening the initial ‘Russia hack’ claims from late Sunday and earlier Monday, describing instead a more ambiguously worded “criminal gang” scenario which might be tied to Russia.

The Department of Energy is now said to be leading the federal response to both the shutdown and the cyberattack investigation, which also involves the FBI and Department of Homeland Security.

At the moment the main Texas to New Jersey lines remain offline, but some smaller lines between terminals are operational, Colonial had announced Sunday.

“Terrible Message” – Bernie Blasts Top Democrats’ Call To Remove Cap On SALT Deduction For The Rich

“Terrible Message” – Bernie Blasts Top Democrats’ Call To Remove Cap On SALT Deduction For The Rich

Authored by Zachary Stieber via The Epoch Times,

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has come out in opposition to an effort by top Democrats to remove caps from SALT, a tax deduction that primarily benefits rich people.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are among the Democrats who want to fully reimplement SALT (state and local taxes), by removing the caps. Republicans’ tax reform bill in 2017, signed by then-President Donald Trump, put limits on the amount of taxes that could be deducted on federal income returns.

“It sends a terrible, terrible message when you have Republicans telling us that this is a tax break for the rich,” Sanders, a nominal independent who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, said on “Axios on HBO.”

“In fairness to Schumer and Pelosi, it is hard when you have tiny margins, but you have got to make it clear which side you are on—and you can’t be on the side of the wealthy and powerful if you’re going to really fight for working families,” he added.

Research indicates that most of the benefits from repealing the cap on SALT deductions would go to households making $500,000 or more per year.

Many Democrats have pushed to repeal the cap. Some Republicans have, too.

“This is something we can do here in Washington to provide relief to the middle-class families that we represent, however, we urge the local and state municipalities to hold the line on taxes,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) told a briefing outside the U.S. Capitol last month.

Pelosi told reporters in early April that the cap was “devastating” to her state.

“It was a political action on the part of the Republicans in a tax bill that gave 83 percent of the benefits to the top one percent, the injustice of it all,” she said.

While the Trump tax cuts cut taxes for many Americans, rich Americans have paid more under the altered tax code, an analysis found.

Under the GOP tax reform legislation, the SALT deduction was capped at $10,000. That spurred outcry from a number of federal and state officials, who claimed the cap was unconstitutional. A group of Democrat governors from blue states said recently that taxpayers in New York and California are each being forced to pay more than $12 billion in additional taxes to the federal government because of the cap.

A repeal of the limits would need to be included in legislation. Some lawmakers have floated including such a repeal in the massive infrastructure package currently being negotiated on Capitol Hill, but President Joe Biden did not include the provision in his infrastructure proposal.

Prospects of a repeal are strong in the House, particularly with bipartisan support. But in a 50-50 Senate, it’s not clear if it would pass, particularly if Democrats or those who caucus with the party will not vote with it.

Sanders told Axios that he wants Democrats to move forward with crafting the infrastructure package, regardless of whether there is Republican support. The GOP has largely opposed Biden’s version because it includes funding for non-infrastructure areas, like elder care.

“Congress takes breaks and it’s easy to obstruct,” Sanders said. “The Senate is a very slow-moving process. … I would begin, you know, starting this work immediately. If Republicans want to come on board, seriously, great. If not, we’re going to do it alone.”

Brink Of New Intifada: Jerusalem Unrest Escalates To Rocket Fire As Israel Activates Troop Battalions

Brink Of New Intifada: Jerusalem Unrest Escalates To Rocket Fire As Israel Activates Troop Battalions

The weekend of unrest in Jerusalem and the West bank is breaking out into broader conflict and rocket fire between Israel and Gaza, with reports of at least 30 rockets fired toward Jerusalem on Monday.

Incoming rocket sirens have been activated in multiple areas across Israel including Jerusalem and the Beit Shemesh area, which lies west of the city. Early reports suggest multiple of the rockets were intercepted by the Israel Defense Force’s (IDF) Iron Dome system, however at least one inhabited building has been reported hit outside of Jerusalem. Israel has initiated airstrikes on northern Gaza.

Hamas has claimed responsibility for the fresh rocket attacks after Israeli security forces refused an ultimatum to withdraw from Temple Mount and the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. Palestinian Islamic Jihad has also claimed to have fired at least 30 rockets from the Gaza Strip.

The weekend had witnessed Israeli police forcibly push out Muslim worshippers from the al-Aqsa and Temple Mount areas, which intensified clashes.

Early social media videos show there have been multiple direct impacts in residential areas of Jerusalem:

In response the IDF has sent reinforcements to muster near Gaza, fearing a escalation, according to The Jerusalem Post, after it was earlier reported on Sunday that Israel’s military deployed an additional three battalions to the West Bank also as the East Jerusalem Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood is a flashpoint after police began evicting dozens of Palestinians from their homes and Jewish settler groups began moving in.

The extra IDF deployments constitute thousands more soldiers than are typically present in the West Bank, setting the stage for potential broader Palestinian uprising.

There had already been days of tit-for-tat attacks focused in Jerusalem, reportedly resulting in hundreds of Palestinians wounded and arrested, particularly related to the ongoing controversial ‘Jerusalem Day’ which involves Israeli-flagged Jewish parades marching through Muslim and Christian neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, Hamas is vowing more rockets

He [Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’ military wing] threatened more attacks if Israel again invades the sacred Al-Aqsa compound or carries out evictions of Palestinian families in a neighborhood of east Jerusalem.

Earlier, Israeli police firing tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets clashed with stone-throwing Palestinians at the iconic compound.

More than a dozen tear gas canisters and stun grenades landed in the Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites, as police and protesters faced off inside the walled compound that surrounds it, said an Associated Press photographer at the scene. Smoke rose in front of the mosque and the iconic golden-domed shrine on the site, and rocks littered the nearby plaza. Inside one area of the compound, shoes and debris lay scattered over ornate carpets.

And now fires at the sacred Temple Mount area?…

Chaos is breaking lose with many commentators noting tensions are on knife’s edge, to the point we are likely about to witness a new Palestinian Intifada

Professor Suspended After Denying Canada Is A Racist Country And Criticizing BLM

Professor Suspended After Denying Canada Is A Racist Country And Criticizing BLM

Authored by Jonathan Turley,

Mount Allison University Professor Rima Azar feels a strong identification to Canada. Born in Lebanon during a civil war, Azar developed a lasting appreciation for the freedoms of Canada, particularly free speech. An accomplished academic in the field of health psychology, she often discusses her views of political and social issues on her  personal blog Bambi’s Afkar from her unique perspective. However, she recently ran afoul of an individual who spotted comments denying that Canada is a racist country and criticizing Black Lives Matter as an organization.  The individual compiled an array of what was viewed to be objectionable positions and triggered a movement to have Azar fired. In a direct attack on free speech and academic freedom, the University then suspended Azar without pay.

According to  the CBC, after months of investigation, Azar will not have to go through “equity, diversity and inclusion training” for her expressing such thoughts on a personal blog. The grounds? Azar was cited by students as “denying systemic racism,” “talking about BIPOC students in unkind ways” and “labelling Black Lives Matter a radical group,” among other transgressions. These improper thoughts include stating “[New Brunswick] is NOT racist. Canada is NOT racist. We do not have ‘systemic’ racism or ‘systemic’ discrimination. We just have systemic naivety because we are a young country and because we want to save the world.”

That is a statement that should generate considerable debate and passion on a college campus. That is what higher education once valued in fostering a diversity of viewpoints and perspectives. The response of the students of Mount Allison was to seek to silence and punish Azar rather than respond to her views.  To the shock of some academics, like Mark Mercer, head of the Society for Academic Freedom and Scholarship, the University caved to the demands and suspended Azar. The Society for Academic Freedom and Scholarship has also supported Azar against her university.

The targeting of Azar began when she disagreed with local activist Husoni Raymond who denounced New Brunswick as “systemically racist.” Raymond stated in response that it is “[d]isappointing to see a professor who’s still ignorant to what racism is and will be using her power within the institution to uphold racists ideologies. Racism IS in Canada. Racism IS in NB.”

[Notably, Azar was not arguing that there was no racism in Canada but that the country is not “systematically racist,” a point of distinction that has produced other controversies in academia].

Azar then responded to Raymond by saying:

“NB is NOT racist. Canada is NOT racist. We do not have ‘systemic’ racism or ‘systemic’ discrimination. We just have systemic naivety because we are a young country and because we want to save the world.

Oh, one quick question to Mr. Husoni Raymond: Upon your graduation from St. Thomas University, you have been named the 2020 recipient of the Tom McCann Memorial Trophy for your ‘strong leadership and character’ … If NB is as racist as you are claiming, would one of its prestigious universities be honouring you like that?”

Azar also disagreed with statements that Canada remains a “patriarchy” afflicted by rape culture. She suggested that people like her from the Middle East have seen “real rape culture” and perhaps readers might want to consider “ISIS practices in Syria.” She also said that BLM is a radical organization, which is a view shared by many and contested by many others.

We recently discussed the case of a police officer who was fired for calling BLM members “terrorists” on a personal postings. Twitter recently censored criticism of a BLM founder and we have been discussing the targeting of professors who voice dissenting opinions about the Black Lives Matter movement, police shootings, or aspects of the protests around the country from the University of Chicago to Cornell to Harvard to other schools. Students have also been sanctioned for criticism BLM and anti-police views at various colleges. Even a high school principal was fired for stating that “all lives matter.”  Each of these controversies raise concerns over the countervailing statements against police or Republicans or other groups.

I am admittedly a free speech dinosaur.  I believe in largely unfettered free speech, particularly for statements made off campus or outside of a classroom. I have defended faculty who have made similarly disturbing comments “detonating white people,” denouncing policecalling for Republicans to suffer,  strangling police officerscelebrating the death of conservativescalling for the killing of Trump supporters, supporting the murder of conservative protesters and other outrageous statements. We previously wrote about academic freedom issues at University of Rhode Island due to its Director of Graduate Studies of History Erik Loomis, who has defended the murder of a conservative protester and said that he saw “nothing wrong” with such acts of violence.

My greatest concern is the conflicted positions on free speech that emerge from these cases. Universities generally do not take similar actions when faculty or students denounce other organizations like the Republican Party or the NRA as terrorists or murderers. They do not take action against those who write racist attacks on white people or sexist attacks on males, as discussed above. The result is not just the sanctioning of faculty for exercising free speech but the biased application of such measures based on the content of such speech.

In a memo sent to faculty, staff and students on Tuesday, Mount Allison’s communications director Robert Hiscock said that “[o]ver the past two months, an independent investigator has reviewed complaints from students alleging discriminatory conduct, stemming from blog posts and student interactions.” However, he said that the findings remain confidential and cannot be discussed. Azar should consider sending a letter asking for the full report to be made public and waiving the right to confidentiality. Otherwise, her reputation will continue to be attacked without any ability to address the allegations in public fully and transparently. For example, there is an allegation that Azar improperly referred to particular students by name in her criticism. However, we do not know if those students previously made their names public in exchanges with or criticism of Azar. There is a major difference between spontaneously criticizing a student who has not spoken publicly and responding to a student who has elected to participate in a public debate by name.

Azar now has a GoFundMe campaign to assist her in the coming legal challenge.

From its highs at $23.88 on its IPO day, Jessica Alba’s Honest Co. has plunged over 30% to $16.52 this morning…

On Wednesday, everyone was excited as the stock which IPO’d at $16, surged over 40% to its highs (after opening at $21.22)…

But now, down over 30% from those highs, the stock is nearing its IPO price…

Alba co-founded the direct-to-consumer brand in 2011 and now serves as chief creative officer.

Alba is not alone, IPOs (and SPACs) have been a shitshow since the February peak exuberance levels…

As Bloomberg notes, there have been hints that the pandemic boom is starting to subside for packaged goods, with some peers reporting higher costs and uneven demand trends recently. Colonial Says Pipeline Segments Being “Brought Back Online”, Goal Is For Service To Be “Substantially Restored” By End Of Week

Colonial Says Pipeline Segments Being “Brought Back Online”, Goal Is For Service To Be “Substantially Restored” By End Of Week

With fears growing that the Colonial shutdown could last for much longer than initially expected, with some analysts warning that a 5-day shutdown could lead to sharply higher prices, and the Biden admin activating a state of emergency to make sure that critical gasoline supplies continue to flow up the eastern seaboard, moments ago Colonial Pipeline issued an update on its attempts to restore operations, saying that “segments of our pipeline are being brought back online in a stepwise fashion” and that the goal now is to “substantially” restore operational service by the end of the week.

Just out from the company:

Monday, May 10, 12:25 p.m.

Colonial Pipeline continues to dedicate vast resources to restoring pipeline operations quickly and safely. Segments of our pipeline are being brought back online in a stepwise fashion, in compliance with relevant federal regulations and in close consultation with the Department of Energy, which is leading and coordinating the Federal Government’s response.

Restoring our network to normal operations is a process that requires the diligent remediation of our systems, and this takes time. In response to the cybersecurity attack on our system, we proactively took certain systems offline to contain the threat, which temporarily halted all pipeline operations, and affected some of our IT systems. To restore service, we must work to ensure that each of these systems can be brought back online safely.

While this situation remains fluid and continues to evolve, the Colonial operations team is executing a plan that involves an incremental process that will facilitate a return to service in a phased approach. This plan is based on a number of factors with safety and compliance driving our operational decisions, and the goal of substantially restoring operational service by the end of the week. The Company will provide updates as restoration efforts progress.

We continue to evaluate product inventory in storage tanks at our facilities and others along our system and are working with our shippers to move this product to terminals for local delivery. Actions taken by the Federal Government to issue a temporary hours of service exemption for motor carriers and drivers transporting refined products across Colonial’s footprint should help alleviate local supply disruptions and we thank our government partners for their assistance in resolving this matter.

Our primary focus continues to be the safe and efficient restoration of service to our pipeline system, while minimizing disruption to our customers and all those who rely on Colonial Pipeline. We appreciate the patience of the traveling public and the support we have received from the Federal Government and our peers throughout the industry.

Biden Rolls Back Trump Proposal To Limit Work Permits For Immigrants Ordered Deported

Biden Rolls Back Trump Proposal To Limit Work Permits For Immigrants Ordered Deported

Authored by Isabel van Brugen via The Epoch Times,

The Biden administration is rolling back an immigration policy sought by former President Donald Trump that would have limited work permits for immigrants with final deportation orders.

Trump on Nov. 19, 2020 proposed that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revise its regulations regarding employment authorization for immigrants who have a final order of removal from the country by a federal judge, and are released from DHS custody on an order of supervision.

On Monday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced that President Joe Biden’s administration will be withdrawing the proposal after reviewing 302 public comments the department received during a 30-day period.

“Nearly 98 percent of commenters opposed the proposed rule with several commenters specifically requesting that DHS withdraw the NPRM [Notice of Proposed Rulemaking],” Mayorkas said, noting that less than two percent of commenters expressed support for the proposal.

Those who backed the proposal supported it because they believed it would deter illegal immigration and protect U.S. workers, Mayorkas wrote.

Commenters opposed to the rule were concerned about the immigrants’ ability to support their families and the impact it would have on their potential employers.

The rule “would impose exorbitant costs and burdens on U.S. employers related to labor turnover,” the DHS said.

“DHS believes that continuing to provide employment authorization to individuals who have final order of removal and are released from DHS custody on an order of a supervision is consistent with this administration’s values and priorities on immigration enforcement,” Mayorkas said in justifying the withdrawal.

He added, “It will allow individuals who do not fall within the administration’s enforcement priorities and who are still in the United States to continue to qualify for employment authorization, to legally work, remain self-sufficient, and support their families, which in many instances include U.S. citizen children.”

Since taking office, Biden has issued a number of orders rescinding Trump-era immigration rules, including suspending the U.S.-Mexico border wall construction, the “remain in Mexico” policy, and dozens more executive actions. According to an analysis by the Migration Policy Institute, Biden unleashed more than 90 executive actions during his first 100 days in office.

Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies, told Breitbart News that the latest move is “a de facto amnesty” for illegal immigrants.

“This is yet another common sense Trump reform that is being reversed,” Vaughan told the news outlet. “Most Americans would be astounded to hear that in 2019 the government issued more than 25,000 work permits to people who have been ordered removed by an immigration judge. These are often criminals who can’t be deported because their home country refuses to take them back.”

“So, we just let them stay, with benefits like a work permit. The Trump administration finally got around to stopping this practice, but not fast enough to keep it from being undone,” Vaughan added.

“We can expect the Biden administration to use the work permit authority to the maximum extent possible, because it’s a de facto amnesty that is easier than trying to get an amnesty bill through Congress.”

Republicans have blamed Biden’s messaging on immigration as well as a rollback of some Trump-era policies for the surge of illegal immigration and crowding at border facilities.

In March, immigration agents apprehended over 172,000 individuals seeking to illegally enter the United States. According to the latest report by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, more than 351,800 encounters were made in the first three months of 2021, compared to 107,700 during the same period in 2020.

The Biden administration has blamed the influx of illegal immigrants on seasonal factors and the crowding at facilities on a “broken” immigration and asylum system inherited from the Trump administration.

Indian COVID Strain Declared “Global Concern” As Data Show It’s Vaccine-Resistant

Indian COVID Strain Declared “Global Concern” As Data Show It’s Vaccine-Resistant

During the WHO’s Monday press conference, Maria Van Kerkhove, the scientist in charge of the agency’s COVID-19 response, declared that COVID-19 variant B.1.617, which was first isolated in India and is believed to be driving that country’s brutal second wave, is a “variant of global concern”.

There’s apparently some new data that’s presently being peer-reviewed which shows that B.1.617 is indeed more transmissible than earlier strains of the virus.

“There is some available information to suggest increased transmissibility,” Van Kerkhove said.

Though examples of every major mutant strain have been discovered across India, local public health authorities have been growing increasingly concerned about B.1.617, suspecting that the variant strain might be even more infectious than B.1.1.7, the mutant strain otherwise known as “the Kent Strain”, after the part of the UK where it was first identified.

Over the weekend, the Indian Express reported that the B.1.617 variant was been found to be driving much of the spread in the outbreak in Odisha, comprising roughly 50% of cases reported. Interestingly, not a single sample of the UK variant B.1.1.7 or the triple-mutant B.1.618 (which was recently found to be more prevalent in West Bengal) has been found in Odisha, suggesting that the original India strain is spreading the fastest.

B.1.617 is also the dominant variant in India’s hardest-hit state, Maharashtra.

Dr. Kerkhove explained that the WHO’s data appears to support the conclusion that B.1.617 is not only more infectious, but also resistant to vaccinations, as a surprising number of patients who have already been fully vaccinated have been found to be infected with the strain.

Meanwhile, shortly after the press conference concluded, the FT reported that a new study showing that B.1.617 has “modest ability” to avoid antibodies elicited by the Pfizer jab, though an extensive vaccination campaign is likely to reduce transmissions, a study has found. The B.1.6.1.7 variant, one version of which was elevated to a “variant of concern” by Public Health England last week, first emerged in the state of Maharashtra in late 2020 or early 2021 and has spread throughout India and to at least 40 countries.

The variant includes mutations that appear to make it more transmissible and less susceptible to vaccines than the virus that first emerged in Wuhan last year.

One such mutation “confers partial evasion” of antibodies generated by the Pfizer vaccine, according to a paper — which has yet to be peer-reviewed — but is set to be published this week by researchers from India, South Africa, Japan and the UK.

Ravindra Gupta, professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Cambridge and one of the study’s authors, told a press conference on Monday the variant discovered in India has mutations that “enable immune escape” and that “we should be assuming it’s as transmissible” as the one first identified in the UK. To be sure, the vaccines “will still protect against severe disease,” he added.

While it might not seem like it at first, this is actually good news for Pfizer. Though it’s definitely bad news for humanity.

Rabobank: You Really Couldn’t Make This Stuff Up… And Who Is Having The Last Laugh

Rabobank: You Really Couldn’t Make This Stuff Up… And Who Is Having The Last Laugh

By Michael Every of Rabobank

Not Just American Hustle

US oil prices are soaring due to a cyber-attack Friday on a key pipeline, which has disabled it with no fixed date to restart operations. The ‘good’ news is this is the work of a criminal group called Darkside, who just want money. Quite the American hustle. The bad news is it shows how vulnerable economies are to this kind of sabotage at a time when we are hardly short of state actors willing and able to perpetrate it due to heightened geopolitical tensions.

On which, China’s Global Times has threatened China could attack Australia with ICBMs should it get involved in a conflict in the South China Sea, a risk featured prominently in the Aussie media of late. The paper’s editor argues: “Given that Australian hawks keep hyping or hinting that Australia will assist the US military and participate in war once a military conflict breaks out in the Taiwan Straits [NB This is not an ‘if’ conflict breaks out], and the Australian media outlets have been actively promoting the sentiment, I suggest China make a plan to impose retaliatory punishment against Australia. The plan should include long-range strikes on the military facilities and relevant key facilities on Australian soil if it really sends its troops to China’s offshore areas and combats against the PLA. In addition to making the plan, China should also reveal this plan through non-official channels to deter the extreme forces of Australia and prevent them from taking the risk and committing irresponsible actions.” Perhaps it just did: and do markets grasp that underlying reality? No, as the AUD is still firm. There’s still too much hustling to be done to worry about clearly sign-posted events like the above.

For example, we now live in a world where Elon Musk appearing on Saturday Night Live is a source of trading action, with the price of Dogecoin slumping 30% –destroying USD billions in ‘wealth’– after Musk dumped the joke crypto rather than pumping it. According to some online critics, that was the funniest part of the show. Yet Sunday then saw Dogecoin recover on news that Musk’s SpaceX will launch a moon mission in 2022 carrying a mini-satellite…paid for entirely with Dogecoin. (“To infinity, and beyond!”)

You really couldn’t make this stuff up: and who is having the last laugh? Yet this is not so amusing for an SEC already flagging it will act on crypto, and watching Saturday trading, and a collapse and bounce in a crypto asset prompted by an individual just fined $20m and forced to step down as his own company’s chair over Tweets prompting securities fraud charges. Forget about space: this is a dog eat Doge world in the end.

Perhaps some crypto can be kept afloat by another long-running institutional joke: China is now saying it will open its capital market…in 2035. Bloomberg also reports that so far the eCNY is a flop with users on its trial run, and argues “Even if authorities ultimately convince –or compel–  citizens to embrace the digital yuan, it’s far from clear they can do the same with international consumers and businesses already wary of China’s capital controls, Communist Party-dominated legal system and state surveillance mechanisms.” Well, quite, and all very much as repeatedly flagged here over the years. Obviously, a 14-year wait for an open capital account won’t help the eCNY much. Then again, other news underlines this may be as much about compelling as convincing – and that could pivot around how the Taiwan situation plays out.

Amazingly, I have had to list all of the above before we even get to Friday’s shocking US payrolls number, which came in at only 266K when the market had expected 1,000K, with March revised down from 916K to 770K. Obviously this release blew market bets about Fed tapering and inflation out of the water. (There is a lot of that about, it seems.) Indeed, there is now a stronger view that central banks can carry on pumping asset markets and commodity prices –and so headline CPI– in the hope this will magically generate wage inflation. It’s either an amazing fumble or hustle: opinions vary. Meanwhile, from a US Treasury Secretary who knows that (long) game well, the message is that the bad payrolls number means a need for more federal social spending. The problem is that there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that the reason more people are not returning to the jobs that have re-opened for them is not “fear”, but that the combination of welfare packages they are currently on pay more than their old jobs did. If so, what we are seeing in real time is the impact of a high level Universal Basic Income (UBI) – and how is that working out for the economy? About as well as Dogecoin over the weekend.

Firms aren’t going to raise wages when they know the stimulus checks run out soon (and as labor generally has no bargaining power): but they can’t re-open until the workers come back. Yet if the government believes the lack of re-opening requires extended stimulus, then theoretically we can all sit like this for a long time, with no economic hustle or bustle. It’s ironic that just as central banks can’t see their miserly policy towards labor doesn’t work, Keynesianism Redux can’t see its generous policy maybe doesn’t always work either.

Talking of labor not working, the UK Labour Party is again pulling itself apart in response to an electoral hammering, while the sleaze-ridden Tory Party (just going by headlines in the Tory press) is riding high with a promise of letting people “Live Local and Prosper”. In short, the state will invest to stop the drift of young people to big cities by offering them opportunities at home. IS this just a political hustle?

Well, it is logical: the votes of the many outweigh the votes of the few, or the one. Yet it’s political-economy, Jim, but not as we know it: one consistent with Brexit – rebalancing between economies, and rebalancing within economies. Can it be done, and weren’t the Tories the ones who did the exact opposite in all their previous years in power? Hard to say, and yes, they were – but they are now not seen as the incumbents by voters due to the Brexit rebranding. Crucially, the Overton Window has moved: British people don’t want to have to do so in order to live decent lives, a sentiment hard to disagree with unless you are already successful, based in London, and/or believe “because markets” is always the way to go. If this becomes a global meme, markets will be forced to pay attention. Even the ones based in London.

Yet before anyone starts to think that global leadership is learning anything, the UK are leading the way on travel bubbles for all-important summer holidays (rather than trying to sell Hartlepool weekend breaks, etc. – surely preferable to the Falklands, which is on the 12-country UK Green List). This potentially matters hugely because even as vaccination rates are high and Covid cases are low in the UK, scientists are warning the most dangerous thing to now do is allow populations to mix –like you do on holiday– and spread new virus variants, some of which are already coming closer to finding their way around some of the vaccines we don’t have enough of. Yes, open up at home, is the message; but take it slow and steady on the international front. Instead, we seem keen to repeat the error of 2020 on the travel front.

Then again, we are repeating the same old errors on many fronts.
