Want to get a taste of the 300-foot superyacht previously owned by Malaysia’s fugitive financier Low Taek Jho?
Well, to do so, one must pay $1.25 million per week, reported the South China Morning Post.
The superyacht, called Tranquility, is now moored at Le Vieux Port at Cannes on the French Riviera. The flat rate of more than one million dollars per week doesn’t include fuel, crew, and other charges.
The vessel was commandeered in Indonesian waters last year as part of Malaysia’s effort to recover $4.5 billion stolen from its sovereign wealth fund 1MDB by Jho. The Malaysian government held an auction late last year, but as we reported in early January, no one wanted to buy the yacht. But then in April, Genting Malaysia Bhd purchased the vessel from the Malaysian government for $126 million.
For a little over a million per week, customers get a glimpse of Jho’s extravagant lifestyle, whose taste for luxury was some of the most expensive in the world.
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said last August that “Everything you can think of is found there, and many things that you don’t think about is also there,” adding “It is not really a yacht, but a huge ship.”
Jho hasn’t been seen in public since 2015, has denied all charges. Court documents said the embezzled funds were “laundered through a complex series of transactions, including through bank accounts in Singapore, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and the United States.”
Tranquility is powered by two 4,828 horsepower engines, has a range of 5,000 nautical miles, arrived at the French Riviera last week from Singapore.
The maintenance cost on the yacht is almost $500,000 per month, Mohamad said last year.
Those who rent Tranquility will have access to the “beach club” with folding platforms at the stern, an on-board gymnasium, a massage room, a sauna, a pool, and a jacuzzi.
The interior decoration was designed by Andrew Winch Designs, known for designing private jets, superyachts, and mansions of the world’s billionaires, features exotic woods, marble, and gold leaf throughout the main cabin.
