The Chief Operating Officer of Facebook Wants to Ban the Word “Bossy”

No this is not a joke. When I first heard grumblings of this yesterday I ignored it as some sort of hyperbolic page-view hunting headline. Today, I finally decided to look into it and the story is even more outrageous than I imagined.

The most hypocritical aspect of this whole campaign is that it was launched by the COO of Facebook. Yes, rather than focusing on the fact that Facebook had been actively marketing adult webcam advertisements to underage girls in an attempt to earn more revenue, she is focused on the horrific repercussions of a single word.

Recall this line from my Facebook post:

Sophie wasn’t the only teen connecting with the page, which Facebook statistics show is most popular with users 13 to 17. Clicking on it didn’t pull the teens into nude webcam modeling, but did mean they would receive the page’s updates and could be mentioned in future versions of the ad.

Moving along, this article is in the same vein as the story I reported on yesterday regarding how Florida is set to imprison people for “bullying” of “cyber-bullying,” whatever that means. This is just another example of taking a problem and offering an idiotic solution.

Idiotic solutions, for an idiotic society. America in 2014.

From ABC:

Sandberg — the chief operating officer of Facebook and author of the best-selling book “Lean In” — is spearheading the launch of a campaign today to ban the word “bossy,” arguing the negative put-down stops girls from pursuing leadership roles.

Sandberg’s organization Lean In is joining forces with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Girl Scouts USA CEO Anna Maria Chávez to launch a public service campaign called “Ban Bossy.” The banbossy.com website gives tips for parents, kids, teachers and others about how to encourage young female leaders.

“I was called bossy when I was in ninth grade,” Sandberg recalled. “My teacher took my best friend Mindy aside and she said, ‘You shouldn’t be friends with Sheryl. She’s bossy.’ And that hurt.

While she and the other women leaders she is recruiting were able to persevere despite the taunt, many little girls can’t, she said.

So Sandberg was called “bossy” and went on to become the COO of Facebook, yet other girls can’t overcome having a word thrown at them? Perhaps there are other factors at play here. How low of an IQ do you need to believe this bullshit?

“This is a word that is symbolic of systemic discouragement of girls to lead. We are not just talking about getting rid of a word, even though we want to get rid of a word,” she said. “We’re talking about getting rid of the negative messages that hold our daughters back.

Here’s Sheryl explaining her brilliant plan:
