Watch Giant Fireball Engulf Philadelphia Oil Refinery

Video of the enormous explosions that created the massive refinery fire shrouding South Philadelphia in smoke Friday morning has emerged.

The fire began some time after 4 am Friday morning. The first couple of explosions clearly roused some neighbors, because they whipped out their smartphone cameras and apparently started filming. Though the exact cause of the fire wasn’t clear, it started after a vat of butane ignited and eventually exploded, Deputy Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said. That triggered a series of smaller explosions, which unfolded as the fire worked its way through the tangle of pipes carrying fuel across the complex. But it appears the big explosion caught on video really set the blaze going.

Refinery emergency response crews and the Philadelphia Fire Department responded to the scene, according to ABC News.

The fire has apparently grown so hot, it can be spotted from space:

The fire is the second this month at the refinery, which is both the oldest and largest in the northeast. Its refinery handles 335,000 barrels of crude oil daily.
